I have no idea how much health insurance costs - we've always gotten it through our companies...
Now its looking like we may be self-employed for awhile, so I'm wondering how much we should estimate for insurance.
Any insights would be helpful. Thanks!

if you are looking into Cobra, I think individual is around $265 a month, and family is considerably more.

it would be for the two of us. We could do cobra, but I thought that was the more expensive way to go.

We just bought HIP cause my husband got a new job as a contractor. It cost $250pp a month. FM if u want more info.

Not sure if COBRA is higher than a private policy, but it also varies by the benefit administrator, company, etc.
If I were to leave my position, COBRA for 2 people would be $715 per month!
Also, keep in mind that COBRA's max is for 18 mths in most cases.....

My sister has COBRA from United Healthcare and she pays about $375 a month.

I am under the healthy new york plan Vytra is my provider. I am unemplyed now but had Vytra while I was working. I loved Vytra and have never had any problems with them.
Edited to say I pay $164 a month but that includes prescription plans as well.

My FBIL just became self employeed for his family of 4 I think he is paying about $1000.
Cobra may be more expensive since you have a certain level...
you could get cheaper...but you won't have the same coverage and you could have a higher deductable (if you don't plan on going to the dr at all during the time...this is a good idea)

COBRA is generally more expensive but you keep the same level of coverge you had when you were employed. One thing you should check is the availability of providers in NY under your current plan. (you are moving from CA if remember correctly)
An individual plan will most likely be less expensive but will most likely have a lower benefit level.
You really need to carefully look at both options and think about what you are going to need from the plan.

Lisa, If you are just moving to a new area you are eligble for Healthy New York but then again you are moving from another state so not so sure about that, but I moved from LI to UPSTATE and it costs me $146 a month and you can keep it for a year. If you need to keep it longer as long as you work I think for 20 weeks a year you can keep it. You have a choice of a few companies. Hope that helps!
