I decorate cakes and I am SO picky about my wedding cake.... FH says that I should make a fake cake myself and have that at the wedding and have a bakery make sheet cakes with the same outside and have that cut in the back.
He thinks it will be a nice personal touch...but I think it may be going too far!
What do you think (some pics of cakes I've made are in my album)

Wow your cakes are amazing. You should enter contests with those. If you put all the time and attention into it, I think you should do a cake that's eddible. I'm sure that baking it isn't the most tedious part, the decorating would be. Your guests would be amazed.

Thank you! I have competed in wedding cake competitions and it is SO much fun!
But I dont think I could do a real cake! I wouldnt be able to do it far in advance and I could just see myself leaning over the cake in my big pouffy slip putting on the finishing touches....lol!

Re: How much is too much?
that seems like a really big DIY. what if you just do a grooms cake? do you have people that you work with and trust their cake making skills that you can have them do it with your instructions? I don't bake and know nothing about cakes but IMO, the few days before the wedding it might be a project to big to tackle.

Yes! All of those cakes were for different clients of mine- but mostly at either restaurants or house parties. The problem is that I do it on the side- not out of a bakery or anything. Most big RH's require that all vendors be insured and I'm not insured as a bakery. So if you had to come up with papers for me I wouldnt be able to help you- but if you could get around it I'd be more than happy to.

Yeah the days before the wedding will be nuts! That's why it would have to be a fake cake- that and like I just put in a different response- I'm not insured- so my RH wouldnt let me make an edible cake unless I made it in their kitchen!

If you do a fake cake then how do you do the cake cutting?

Re: How much is too much?
i think you should do a fake one
get a small cake to do the cutting with and im sure the RH will do something to camoflauge it so nobody realizes anything

Re: How much is too much?
I know brides who do it all the time. Its a dummy cake and sometimes some of the layers are real. But in this case i think you should definately do a dummy cake and have a flat sheet in the back to serve. Also, I love your cake designs! your very talented.

Re: How much is too much?
wow!!! ordinarily i would say to just let the RH or a bakery make your cake so it is one less thing to be concerned with...but after seeing the cakes you have made...i think i agree with your FH...they are incredible and professional looking...they will def add a personal touch have you taken classes or is it something you just enjoyed and learned on your own?

Re: How much is too much?
My aunt made the cake (a real one, not a fake) for her daughter's wedding...she was SOOOOO stressed out the few days before about it and she had trouble enjoying the day and she wasn't even the BRIDE!! I'd have it done by someone who you know and trust. Good luck!
