to change your last name. I thought there was just a section on the marrige certificate that you fill out with your new name and that's that. Am I mistaken about this? Is there something else that needs to be done?

Nope, you have to go to Social Security and DMV as well. Dont' forget to call your credit card companies, utility companies, frequent flyer accounts.

but the marrige licence is the one thing that makes it offical, without it you can't do all that other stuff right?
I'm moving after the wedding to Massachusetts, so the only things that really have to change for me that I wouldn't have to anyway are my SS and Passport and Credit cards. But I have to change my address with everyone anyway.

You have to go done to DMV & S.S, to make it go faster you can go on-line and fill out all the forms before hand.

right. from my understanding (i just went), after the officiant sends it in, you get it in the mail 4 weeks later. it's that certficiate you take to make all your changes.

There's a section of the marriage license where you indicate if you're changing your name. For tax and insurance purposes, your maiden name remains your legal name until you change it with the SS office. After you get married and receive the marriage certificate, you can begin the name changing process. Here are some of the things you will need to change your name on: SS DMV Credit Cards Bank Insurance 401K Passport Tax Forms I'm sure I'm forgetting things, but these are the main things. Most credit card companies will change your name over the phone. Banks, SS office, and the DMV need to see a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Your office may want to see your new SS card before changing your name on your insurance. It's a pain, but it's something you can get done relatively quickly.
