How Much to Spend on Parents' Gifts?

How Much to Spend on Parents' Gifts?

My parents are paying for about 90% of the wedding day. I definitely want to get them a thank you gift but I can't decide how much to spend. I can't decide if it should be more of a token gift or a real thank you costing somewhere between $500-$1000? My good friend just got married and she spent $200 on a thank you gift for her parents. Does that sound about right? I haven't been able to get a good answer because everyone just says do what you feel comfortable with but I'm just not sure what that is!

You are able to splurge on a very nice gift then i say go for it but if you can't then maybe you give them the parent photo albums, precious moments statue, jewelry or just beautiful frames.

Thanks for your advice! Since they're paying for so much of the wedding, I feel like I'd be wrong to not give them something special and nice. But on the other hand, I am paying for that 10% of the wedding plus the entire honeymoon and extras and I'm just running out of money to spend. I'll probably end up meeting in the middle and getting them a nice gift but not something super expensive.

You can also do a future gift. . like thank you for making our day so special. we want to do something special for you so on your next anniversary we are taking you to. . .. or sending you to. . then you can do something a little nicer but doesn't have to be now. . and I don't mean like send them on a huge trip or anything but a really fancy dinner they might not go to or something

This is a great idea!!

Maybe also you can get them tickets to a Broadway show or a sporting event if they are into that.

I wanted to get our families something really nice since they're helping us out a lot... BUT they both told us the point of them helping us out was for us to save money so they didn't want us to 'waste' it on them.

So basically I still have no idea what I'm getting them.

mine would say the same thing... my prob is that a month after our wedding is my parents 30th anny so i feel like i have to go above and beyond and make a combined wedding/anny gift

don't feel bad if you don't have the budget to get something extravagant... it's hard with all the wedding expenses adding up to alot... in the end, it's the thought that really counts... sometimes the best gifts are the sentimental ones that come from the heart and they don't even cost much... the kind that will bring a tear to their eyes... like scrapbook of you through the years, with a heartfelt poem.. embroidered hankie for the ceremony... etc... if you do have the budget for something a little nicer, then go for it... or like the pp mentioned an iou type gift is nice too... that way you have time to save up for it after the wedding...

don't worry whatever you decide your parents will love it because i'm sure they aren't expecting you to even get them a gift!

My parents are paying for 99% of the wedding, but I think they would be upset if we spent to much on them. Instead we are trying to think of things that would be special. My mom had her eyes on a Waterford Tea Set for years. FH found it on ebay for $99. So we got my mom that. I think she will still say we spent to much.

Dad I am still thinking but planning to spend around $100 on him too.

my other thought on this is that most parents do not care about the amount you are spending and as other said. . they are spending money on wedding so we can save it. . that's why I think that sometimes just making an effort to do something together is nice. . like it will be the first time you are going out with them as married couples. . represent the shift in your relationship!
