A paralegal at my law firm sent an email out to our entire floor to say she was collecting tips for the woman who cleans our offices every night. What is an appropriate amount to contribute? I've never heard of this before, but it's a nice gesture. I don't want to seem cheap (especially since I'm one of the attorneys), but I don't have much to spare these days between Christmas and saving for the wedding / a house...
There are probably 20 people on my floor...

Re: How much to tip maid at the office?
I would just ask and see what everyone else is doing.

well you can ask the other people in the office how much they're leaving. Since it's about 20 of you contributing, i don't think you have to worry it will probably be a small amount.

I had never heard of such a thing either until I got to my current job either but apparently they so this for the housekeepers every year...there are two of them and I give a total of $20 for both. But we have a lot of people in out bulding so they always walk away with well over $500 each...I know that really didn't answer your question but just to give you an idea...

I would ask around, but I would think around $25 would be good.

I asked a few people what the normal range was and just gave something in there. When I went to the office of the woman collecting, the card was set on a separate table with a 'bank' to put the money into... so no one could see what anyone contributed. I thought that was nice.

Great, after I make my contribution, we get another email 'correction' that this same woman is now also collecting tips for our floor page, too...
I appreciate these people, I really do... but this is getting out of control. I'd have given a different contribution earlier if I thought we were tipping more people.
I just wish I knew who else we were tipping this year. (Sorry, I'm tired and grouchy today)
