The hall suggested $400 which seems alot to me. I'm having under 100 people. Isn't it usually 3-4 per person?

maitre'd part time 2 years ago while going to school... what so many people dont understand is that for most halls, the maitre'd tip is going (in addition to the maitre'd), towards all the people who assisted on the event... in every aspect... at most halls the tips are pooled & divided amongst the banquet managers who help you throughout the planning of the event, the managers who run the day to day operations of the hall, and the other maitre;ds. This is peoples livlihoods, its one thing if you were not told up front about tipping the maitre'd, but if you were told in advance how much you should budget to tip ...than we should understand that these are the people who worked hard to ensure the event went off without a hitch, these tips are there livlihood, and unless you had a bad experience or a bad wedding than you should be tipping within the guidelines that were explained to you when you booked your hall, again if they didnt tell you about the tip upfront, than that is a completly different story. How would you feel if you one week your pay check was significantly less? But it is most of the time the faults of the people who book your wedding, they dont explain it well enough & dont say exactly where the tip is going & the real reason they dont is because they probably feel bad asking you to tip them, even though only a portion of it is going to them. I think if more people just realized how many people & FAMILIES it effects when people tip poorly there wouldnt be such outrage at the recommended amounts people are quoted to tip.
what if they're already getting a $3 pp host fee?
I have never heard of a host fee, but it sounds the same as a MD tip.... the service charge is what pays the hourly wage of all service people in the budiling who have conributed to your event, waiters busboys, hostess', cleaning people, valet, the people who set up your room for the event, grounds keepers, bathroom attendants, coat check, cooks, dishwashers, ect.... when people say how they worked in the restaurant or catering business & never saw any of the service charge money... well where do you think your paycheck came from??? Waiters in catering halls dont make $3 dollars and hours like normal restaurant workers, they make a higher per hour wage & because the government is sooo freaking greedy they make caterers tax this service charge & then on top of that they tax the poor waiter in his pay check again!
