How much weight is normal for 24 weeks?

My friend is so bummed. she came from the doctor's office today and has gained a total of 21 pounds. The doctor told her she needs to watch what she eats or the baby will be to large when she tries to deliver.

Is this wait gain accurate for 24 weeks?

everyone is different, I am 21 weeks and just got back from the doctor and gained a total of 11 lbs. Every doc is different too in what they say.

I think it depends. Everyone really is different. But generally, a thinner person will put on more weight than an overweight person. I mean if a preggo is eating right and not binging on the fattening cravings too much, a thinner person will naturally put on more weight b/c their body needs more insulation for the baby. IMO the best gauge is discussing it with the doctor, who obviously knows her and her body better. Of course, not all doctors have the same ideas. When I was pg with my son, the one doctor seemed to think I was putting on too much and the other doctor didnt think it was an issue. Your friend shouldnt be dieting obviously but if she has been overdoing it, she should probably try to refocus on her eating habits. I dont know if my answer even helps but the whole thing is there just isnt a way to fairly compare weight gain with one preggo vs. another preggo. Plus, she could gain only baby weight from this point forward. I didnt gain all that much in my last trimester with my son, I actually lost a few lbs at the end.

ETA: I gained 37 lbs with my first and about 16 with my second. But I had alot of m/s with #2 and I was heavier going into that pregnancy.

Every body gains weight differently and although there are guides for weight gain, you can fall on either side depending on a lot of factors.

Also, weight gained and weight of baby have nothing to do with each other. I gained 60 and my daughter was 7 lb 3 oz. I ate fairly healthy and exercised a ton. I had a pretty easy delivery and my recovery was super easy, even with a 4th degree epi.

So far at 22 weeks I'm at 14 lbs. weight gain. My Dr. hasn't mentioned any problem with that yet so I'm assuming I'm on target. Hope this helps.

I went to the Dr yesterday. I am 20.5 weeks and have gained 12 lbs so far. She said that was right on target.

As people have said, it does depend on the person. However, at 20 weeks, the baby is still very small and your friend probably has a big growth spurt coming which is why her dr is warning her to watch it a bit. At 19 weeks I had gained 6 pounds. Now at almost 30 weeks I am up to 19 pounds. So you see what I mean about gaining alot after 20 weeks!
