I know that the cost off a wedding nowadays has skyrocketed, especially on Long Island and NYC. I also know, however, that New Yorkers tend to give money as gifts at weddings, and are usually very good about covering the cost of their dinner. Do you expect to come out on top?

Maybe I could come out close to even with the cost per person (however I have a lot of out of state/upstate guests) but by the time I add in photo, music, ect there's no way! lol

Haha that's the situation I'm in! A lot of my family didn't give my sister a lot of money for her wedding, so I'm just hoping to at least pay for the RH!

We got back almost exactly what we spent on just the reception - not any of the vendors or extras

Same for us. This is what I see most often. I'd be shocked if someone made back all their money.
ETA: Even if guests 'know proper wedding etiquette', you won't nearly make back the money you spent on the wedding. Wedding etiquette dictates that you 'cover your plates and anything extra you can throw in'. Even if everyone covers their plate, you won't make the money back.

The gifts covered our reception venue costs, but not all of the other stuff (photographer, flowers, band, etc.).
But I didn't do it to break even, I did it because I wanted to - it was totally worth it to me, and we had a blast on our wedding day!

Pretty positive the gifts will only cover a small fraction of the reception alone. The wedding is definitely costing a heck of a lot for us, but we knew this before we made our final decision to book our venue. We're very happy though with our choice so far. Hoping that will be the same on the day!!!

So much!!! Luckily, my parents are paying for the RH so we will make back all of the money we put into it, and then some...but it's still hard!!!!

We got back probably what our reception cost...but that was it. So we did not come out on top...but it was the wedding we both wanted so it was okay. I don't think you EVER come out on top....unless someone else is paying for all, most, or a huge chunk of your wedding expense.

I did not think I would get back the amount that I payed for everything for the wedding but I was pleasantly surprised that I just about broke even.

Definitely not expecting to break even...although that would be AMAZING :) My FH have been saving like crazy just for the wedding...so that we don't have to dip too much into our personal savings accounts etc.

We had a smaller wedding compared to most on LI but overall we did well. But, if you're paying for every penny of your wedding yourselves, which is what we did, then there's no possible way to come out on top. Unless you're maybe booked at a venue where everything is included; DJ, flowers, photos, etc. We were set back 10K I believe. That was with generous gifts from most ppl.
And honestly, if you're saving for a home and again not getting help from parents, it's not worth all the little extras that most LI brides feel the need to do. Hindsight. Just my experience.
