My ankles and feet are really swollen now. I am I guess 29 weeks now...and they are swollen to the size of my calves. The thing is - they had been swollen for the past couple of weeks but only at like the end of the day - and then i would lay down and elevate and they'd go down.
The boogers don't go down anymore. They are permanently ham-like. I am wearing flat shoes, no hose or socks, rubber soles, drinking water and sitting with my feet up.
My hands seem okay and my face looks normal. Anybody have any advice? Horror stories? Anything you want to share while we wait for the doctor to call back?
Oh and my glucose diabete thing is all cool- I am processing sugars like a champ. More kit kats please.... (sorry my michele....I will eat one for you I promise in honor of your suffering. I was kinda hoping I would join your club so that you didnt' have to go the rest of the way alone!)

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
I was retaining water everywhere in the end. As long as your blood pressure is OK you are fine. Use it as an excuse to get plenty of footrubs, believe when the baby comes you'll be lucky to get a quick peck on the check

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
I agree with everything Stacey said. I am swollen from my toes all the way up to my knees, can no longer wear shoes, only flip flops or slippers, and am also retaining water in my face, hands, and lower arms, and yet I'm fine. They were monitoring the heck out of me, but finally just resigned to the fact that I'm a human water balloon.
Definitely talk to your doctor, and get lots of foot rubs!

I started retaining water at about 30 weeks, so I'd say you're right on schedule!

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
It just makes you feel better.
You're doing everything you can to avoid swelling... unfortunately it's not helping. I know the feeling. I lay on the floor with my feet on the couch waaaay above the level of my heart, and I still don't see a difference.
It's actually painful now because I don't think my skin can stretch anymore, and walking is a HUGE chore. I hope you never get to this point.

Jenn - walking already hurts bad!!!!
I really hate to complain, but it's getting tough and I am worried that I have a lot more time!!
Guess I just have to stick it out!

I'm not pg, so forgive me if I'm way off base, but does salt intake have an affect on the swelling?

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
Two of my friends had this at the end -- you need to get your blood pressure checked! It could be a few things. They both had to be on bed rest for a few days to a week or so.
Best wishes!

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
Jenny, watch your diet too....try to really lower your salt intake...that can cause swelling too! Definitely keep your feet elevated EVERY chance you get - not just in the evening!
And get up and WALK around your office building, if you can. Circulation will help the swelling too.
And lastly...you might want to consult your doctor about this...but, you might be doing your legs a disservice by foregoing the socks/stockings. Some support hose or knee socks might actually HELP your situation right now.
Hang in there!

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
I had very very bad swollen ankles when I was preggo - I even was on bedrest for a week or so at around 7 1/2-8 months. My doctor told me my diet had nothing to do with it, the only thing that helps is laying with them up - up high, above your heart. So get 4 pillows under them whenever you can. Ugh! My legs were so swollen, I felt like the Pillsbury dough boy, when I pushed my finger into the ankle area, it left a depression that didnt go away for awhile. All I could wear was a pair of leather Keds with the shoelaces open.
Hang in there I really feel for you.
Get DH to wait on you and get those legs UP!!!

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
Def talk to your Dr. I began to swell late in my pregnancy -- and my blood pressure went up -- they monitored me for a couple of weeks and it turned out I had Pre- Eclampsia. They had to induce me early. Nothing to worry about -- just get checked as soon as you can ! Baby and me are just fine!!!

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
I agree with Claud about wearing support hose... I feel for ya...I was pretty swollen myself at the end of my pregnancy! It actually got worse after giving birth (I had an IV -- lots of fluids). My legs looked like elephant legs. Ok...tangent.
It will get better though. Walk around (sitting is bad) and DRINK WATER! (I know you love that piece of advice! )

Jenny- I would NEVER want you to be a member of my club...eat those KitKats for me..I just have a few flavored (not choc, but those vanilla ones YUMMY). They were minis though so the cheating wasn't too bad.
Call the doctor. Extreme swelling can mean a variety of things. You need to elevate your legs and if that does not help relieve the swelling call the doctor. And drink your water!! (where do I send my bill again 0

Re: how swollen is 'too' swollen
Well I got my feet up way high above my head last night for hours. For the first morning in a while, they were nice and trim today! Claud - I am going to wear knee high socks/stockings from here on out. My sister advised that as well. My blood pressure is really right on - I was just at the doctor, and I eat almost no salt - so my diet isnt' to blame (this time!)...I am sure its the water, combined with just being 29 weeks pregnant!
I promise I will keep my feet up though as much as possible! Thanks for all the advice!
