Where - on LI or in NYC? For most places you need to get temporary certification through the Board of Ed.

You would need to get a masters in Art Education. You would have to do student teaching and take a certification test. You can get your masters almost anywhere. CW Post had a very good Art Ed program. One of my friends just graduated with his masters in Art Education.
my sister also went to CW Post for her masters in art ed after having a BFA...
and art is lucky...no video for perm certification!!!
one thing that you can do is go through a certification program...i know a few people who have done this through Queens College (not sure if it available through other schools)...but you take all of your ed courses the first semester...then student teach the second...

Re: HOw to become a teacher?
i may be totally off on this, but, may i suggest trying to obtain the position before trying for your masters..... reason why i say this is because one of my BM's has her masters, and now cannot get hired.... Everytime she goes for an interview, they wind up hiring the other teacher who doesn't have their masters... It's not that she isn't an amazing teacher either... She goes above & beyond when it comes to her classroom - even if it has to come out of her own pocket.... She is stressing finding a job now
lisa...its a good point that b/c of budget cuts...BAs look cheaper than MAs...but you need to be certified...there isnt a district on Li that will hired an uncertified teacher...I was certified with my BA...so I 'left off' my MA when I applied to LI schools
the only way to avoid the MA at first would be to go through some certification process...
just wanted to add...if you are willing to work in NYC (and there are tons of great schools in NYC - my old one was 10X better than the LI school I worked for)...you may be able to get a NYC certification...that means going to Brooklyn and getting fingerprinted...its laborious, but its the only way to get a job...without having a teaching degree.

Ok, you need 12 education credits, which is one semester, and one semester of student teaching, plus certification test (on July 19 if not then not till December again!), fingerprints, and transcripts. FH is becoming an art teacher, and I am in the process of finishing my cert. in music, so that's all I can think of right now that you need. FM me if you have any other quetions.

go to this page for the specifics of what you need- you really need to speak to an advisor to get the correct information. you dont want to rely on second hand info. trust me, i did and i almost did not get my certification b/c of it.
