how to get smell out of dress

how to get smell out of dress

ok so my bm dresses arrived a few days ago and when we open up the package this weird smell came from them. At first we were all like W** is this, and its real bad. I still have fh's cousins dress bc i am dropping it off to her later on tonight and ive let it air out and put fabreze on it and still smell it.

Well one of my bm's went to a tailor and she said something about the smell and the tailor said its not where they had it stored its formaldehyde that is in the dye when they dye the dresses. Usually they let the dresses air out a little bit before shipping but i guess since mine were delayed they shipped it ASAP. He said he has had to do dresses before and they had the same smell.

problem is now how to get this smell out will dry cleaning do the trick. The fabreze did help a little but not completely. Its real bad, let me just put it this way, i made a joke to fh when we had the dresses in his room and he was complaining about the smell. I said well it should just remind you of your single days yeah so hope you get the point

does anyone you know have the Whirlpool Steam Dryer? It has a setting on it called, 'steam refresh' and it's made for getting the 'smells' out of clothing. let's say you were in a bar that allowed smoking and only wore the tailored pair of pants you wore that night once. You put the pants in the dryer and it will steam them, leaving them fresh smelling.

ugh.
I work for a costume company part of the year and we have the same problem with the same smell.

I wish i had better advice for you but we were always told to just air them out.

Bringing them to a dry cleaner may work, it definitely wouldn't hurt to bring one in and ask them what they think.

EW all I can think of when I read this is an episode of CSI new york when the bride died b/c there was formalyhyde in the fabric of the dress, and it seeped in through her skin and poisoned her! Is that safe!?!?

well thats what they use in the dyes. The problem is that each dye lot is different and for certain colors they have to use a stronger chemical but yeah its used for colors. The tailor said all bm dresses are made like that, just that usually they air it out first so by the time people get it the smell is gone. I do have to say that i left one bm dress to air out and it has gotten alot better

im a little afraid of putting the dresses in the dryer though. But im guessing the dry cleaner should have something too that will get the smell out

It does not dry the fabric at all - it just steams it - to remove smell. You do not have to dry it - it's kinda like putting an outfit in the bathroom when you shower - to get wrinkles out.

Yeah i have to go with my cousin to bring her to my seamstress so on the way we'll bring her dress to a cleaner just to ask

i think the dry cleaning just might do the trick or why don't you try steaming up a shower and leaving them in the bathroom that may also work (check first depending on the fabric)

Ait them out as much as possible and have them dry cleaned. The only thing that make sme nervous about dry cleaning is...what if they dont have it back in time or they lose one....

But air out in the mean time.
