Hpw much do you save on STAR? How long does it take to get it after you do the paperwork?

Hpw much do you save on STAR? How long does it take to get it after you do the paperwork?

This is my parents home- they had STAR. Just regular Star, will I get the same discount? How fast do you get it ? ( My parenst are deceased and we have the house now and are going thru the legalities of putting my name on it etc right now.)

I think its a few hundred $ depending on your tax amount. We just sent ours in I think for 2005 or 2006. You keep whatever the previous owner had til yours goes into effect. I'm not sure if the one we just sent it is for 2005 or 2006 though.

Karissa I don't know about Suffolk. We didn't get to keep the previous owners STAR when we bought. He had two one was for veterans and then the other and we didn't get to keep either. Our taxes went up about 1500 when we bought. We sent ours in too and we were told we won't get a letter back saying how much they are taking off either it will just happen I think ours will take effect 3/05, for some reason March is sticking out in my head.

We definitely have their STAR now. Our taxes are lower then they are supposed to be. Maybe Nassau is different? Hmmmmm.....

We're in Suffolk and we didn't keep the previous owners Star discount either. It's a state run program, so I don't think the county matters.

You have to apply before the annual deadline. I think that varies by town as it goes into effect with their tax cycle - in Islip I think it was in April. In our case we closed just after a deadline so while we could file any time, it was considered as being submitted the following April (almost a year after we closed) and went into effect with the next tax year starting that December, so it was over 18 months before it kicked in for us. I don't recall the exact amount - it was around $900 - $1000 but I do recall that after the tax increases for the school budgets last year we ended up with saving $15 off our new tax rate - in other words, the tax hike ate up the whole Star rebate

You have to apply in Suffolk by January 5, 2005 for it to go into effect in July, 2005. If you apply after that date, it won't go into effect until July, 2006.

Check with your town to be sure - we're in Islip and our tax year starts in December, with the filing deadline in the spring. Brookhaven, where DH's cousin lives, was a bit different, but I think his was also in the spring, so different townships may have different filing dates.

DH went to town hall in Islip and picked up the papers, got all the info filled in and handed them in right then and there.
