HUGE Dress fiasco

HUGE Dress fiasco

So, here's the problem...

Some of you may remember that I postponed my wedding from last year, but I had already bought my dress. Well, I went and picked it up from FH's aunt's house, where it has been for the past year. Tried it on this morning and...

It Doesn't FIT!

The zipper won't close. I have been dieting and have lost a few pounds, but I NEVER thought I gained so much that the dress would not fit!

What do I do?

Part of me wants to just say screw it, slap the thing up on ebay and buy a new one... the original dress was a second choice for me, not one I really fell in love with... My mother seems to think we can put a lace panel in the back to cover up the gap, but I specifically bought the dress because it did NOT have lace - I don't like lace.

Anybody have any other ideas?

OH NO!!!!! That sux!!!! If you are to buy a new dress you would totally have to buy an off the rack dress now. You would never have time to order a new one and have fittings. Is there not enough room for a seamstress to let some out of the dress on the sides? I would take the dress to somebody and see what they would recommend doing. Good luck in whatever you decide.

How small is the dress? Just a little? or a few sizes?

I would just look for another dress if you its a couple sizes too small......you don't want to stress yourself out with trying to lose weight.

Re: HUGE Dress fiasco

How much does the dress need to be extended in order to fit....1 size or more than 1?

There is about a 4 inch gap...

and the bodice is all beaded, so it would be almost impossible to extend.

My cousin had a similar problem and I recommended that she have the back converted to a corset back and it worked PERFECTLY! No new dress for her! They just remove the zipper, add a privacy panel for under the 'ties' and then attach loops to each side to 'thread' the ties through.

Voila!

Veggies and Exercise!!! You have time if it's not an extreme amount of weight. Good Luck hope it works out.

I think you should go for another dress since you didn't love it in the first place.

Wow what a decision you have to make!
I would shop around and make sure another dress that you love could be done for you in the short amount of time you have until your wedding before you go and sell your dress though!

This sounds like the best plan.........

I say take a day off, go to various bridal shops and see what you can buy off the rack. If you don't find anything, go to David's.

Don't assume you're going to lose the weight. I wanted to lose weight for my wedding, and thought it would be no big deal because I have health issues and problems eating...and I didn't.

Don't know what your gown looks like, but can you put in the corset back like others have suggested? It would certainly fix the problem. Or, maybe you could have something else done to the back that isn't lace? An illusion panel? I guess that depends on how much you need to hold up in the front!! If you have a lot, then go for the corset. It would be pretty difficult to get another dress that you love now, although not impossible. Have you checked eBay? Lots of samples on there, but you haven't tried them on, so that could be a problem. And there are other sites where brides sell dresses, and there are places that sell gowns for charity. I'm thinking of donating my gown, although my mom's trying to talk me out of it (wants me to use it for a bassinet ) Need a size 16 Casablanca?

First, thank you all for your kind words and advice. Actually, I am currently dieting and exercising, but I alsp have medical problems that make it more difficult to lose weight quickly. I have lost about 5 pounds in two weeks, which is good for me, but even at that pace, I will never fit into the dress.

My mother, who is an amazing sewer, has looked at the dress and came to the same conclusion that many of you have mentioned: Take out the zipper and put in a ribbon to convert the back to a corset-style. I absolutely LOVE this idea, so the dress fiasco seems to have been solved!

Thank you all!!

I'm glad the problem is solved! I love a corsett back. I actually wanted mine converted to one but the guy who did my alterations sewed ribbon on & made a fake corsett, it looks rediculous so I'm cutting the ribbon off. Good thing you rmother knows how to sew.
