Human Resources question

Human Resources question

I'm getting alot of static at my job lately - they are piling on the work (more and more everyday - you have to see the volume of work I'm getting) as well as alot of misc. b.s. from clients who think I can re-invent the wheel for them which is leading to ALOT of stress. I'm very sick (PG related) during the week, but I'm sort of 'OK' on the weekends which tells me the job is getting to me more than I realize and may be jeapordizing my/the baby's health.

I was going to wait until after the baby was born to look for another job because everyone tells me that companies won't hire me if I'm pregnant. Is that legal? Is it not a good idea to look for a job when I'm pregnant - even though this job is killing me and I'm forever unhappy/crying?!?

no, it is def. not legal to take into consideration your pregnancy when applying for another job. Unfortunately, that isn't to say it doesn't happen though. Normally, I'd see women wait til they are offered the job and then once accepted inform the manager, but if you're already showing that's not an option!

Sorry I don't have better advice for you - maybe you can speak with your supervisor about the workload (esp given the circumstances)?

I wanted to also add that you should take a close look at your FMLA policy - if your Co. pays a good portion of your 12 wk absence, you may want to stick it out til after you have the baby.
I believe to qualify for the Family Medical Leave, you need to be employed for 1 year, so you don't want to lose that.....(assuming your place qualifies at all)

I don't think you can go on FMLA until after the baby is born. You can look into Short Term Disability as well as your company's policy on Long Term Disability. Then again there is always taking a leave of absence, although I am not sure how your co. handles that - paid at a lesser rate? Not paid at all?

You can look for another job and it completely illegal for the HR people to discriminate against you bc of your pregnancy. But if you start a new job soon, you may not be entitled to as much time off as you would be at your job that you have now.

I would talk to your HR dept if you can. Just tell them that it is making you physically overwhelmed and you cannot jeopardize your baby's health. Maybe they can lessen your load or put 2 people on the job. It's SO not worth it to be crying all the time.... I'm so sorry....see I work in HR and I would do anything in my power to help an employee if they came to me like this. Let us know how it turns out

its not legal not to hire you for being pregnant, however it would be tough to prove it...

if you might be having a risk with your baby, you should check with your doctor, you might be able either stay home from work on some sort of disability, or a doctors note saying you can not work past the 9-5.... id definatley check with the doctor

Re: Human Resources question

It is illegal to discriminate due to a medical condition (pregnancy qualifies). But as others have said that dosent mean it dosent happen.

Before thinking about a move you really need to take a carefull look at your current benefit plans. Talk to your Doctor then to your Manager and to HR. If your Doc says you need to slow down - less hours, less stress your company needs to make accomodations for your condition.

Again be sure you know your companies benefits. Check on the:
Short Term Disability Plan
Maternity Leave (if any)
FMLA Policy (is the 12 weeks based on cal year or is it a rolling 12 wks)

Let us know how you do. Hopefully you will get some rest over the holiday weekend.

Can you tell your doc about all the stress and ask him to put you out on disability?

Re: Human Resources question

One thing to remember is that by law an employer is only required to hold your job for 12 weeks for any disability (FMLA). So you should definately check into your companies poilicy.
