Hurricane Tips!
Received this from a co-worker that lives in Florida....it's helpful but warning it might bug you out more....like it did to me
- fill water in bathtubs – not to bathe in (although you might want to splash your armpits a time or two)….to clean with and flush toilets with…and boil if you run out of other water – better safe than sorry….it drains easily afterwards if you didn’t need it.
- Get cash – ATM’s don’t work with no power – seriously – and credit card machines don’t work either
- Keep your pets inside – they get freaky in hurricanes and will run away to hide and could be gone for good – have plenty of water and food.
- Gas up to full in ALL cars, boats, anything with a tank, etc. – pumps don’t work – you may want to get an extra can or two AND gas trucks may not have access to your area for a couple of weeks…yes that was the case here (thank God for my anal husband who filled twenty gas cans – that to can just be put in your cars later if not needed!!)
- If your chain saw is gas operated have gas and oil for it –definitely works better that way - have it ready (we had to cut someone out of a house because a tree blocked the doors and we have had to cut up trees that fell across the road so we could leave our drive and neighborhood – having a chain saw is a good thing! And electric ones don’t work with no power) it is a cheap investment but priceless if you need it.
- Gas Grill – fill your tank and get a spare – you can even bake a pumpkin pie on a gas grill!!
- Wal-Mart has battery operated fans (and they can be a blessing)
- fill water bottles full of water – or Ziplocs and put in your freezer – bunches of them so you can keep your food cold after the storm – you will be cooking a LOT as to not lose it all if your power is out for a few days or a week! Ice is a premium in this heat and after a storm.
- Taping windows is a waste of time – doesn’t work but if they are out of wood you can buy a strong mesh fabric and nail up – we lost garage doors, stairs, roofs, but the windows stayed in tack (water still comes in even if windows don’t break)
- Don’t drink the water until you know it is safe – ALL kinds of stuff goes out in to the water system :)
- Stock up on batteries, flashlights candles & matches (and lots of wine) Oil lamps are great…if you remember to get oil for them
- Battery operated radio is a good thing to have
- you will be able to text and email from your phone – IF your battery is charged – a back-up is good and make sure you have a car charger because you can always go to the car and charge it.
- Don’t stand in the window to see what is going on – trees and things can come flying through :)
- IF you are evacuating let someone know where you are that can tell others – making your family panic is not good – SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE – know what the traffic situation is on the evacuation route – YOU DON’T WANT TO GO THROUGH THE HURRICANE SITTING IN YOUR CAR STUCK IN TRAFFIC!! Sometimes you are better off staying put and battening down the hatches.
- if you have water rising in your house take hammer, saw and any other tools that may help you break through a roof if needed (have those out and ready if you are stupid enough to stay if you live on the water :)
- Hurricane parties are fun – but hurricanes are serious – even a category 1 or 2 can cause catastrophic damage
- Bill’s 2 recommended tracking sites (and he is the expert):

- If the storm is still in tact and the eye goes over you the sun will shine – don’t be tempted to go outside and get in your car to check things out – the back half of the storm is coming and will catch you off guard!...NOT fun….very scary
- If you live near the water – take pictures of your house and belongings in case you have to prove what was in your garage – yep, we had to and everything was gone but fortunately I had taken pictures so we got paid on stuff
- Put your most valued papers and photos in large Ziplocs (and seal tight) and set your treasures up high on counters or 2nd floor
- Have a video camera handy for immediately after the storm – that footage can also save your *** with insurance companies. – remember, if you have water through your house, it will wick up in to your clothes – make them pay you for your clothes because they begin to fall apart shortly there after….our insurance inspector taught us that one as she was writing up our clothes – who’d have known!
