Hurting a Hair Dresser's Feelings?

Hurting a Hair Dresser's Feelings?

Bit of a sticky situation here....

I've had a family hair dresser since I was like 13. When I first went to him, my curly, naturally frizzy long hair was a hack job. Someone had 'put layers in' but had no clue what they were doing so I had hair at all different lengths.

He cut it short as I would allow, straightened out the layers and has generally been pretty reliable for cutting my hair (which I now keep long single layer) without trying to force me ot put layers in, bangs in, etc if I don't want them.

Great haircutter who does what I want - on the cheap. He also is a family friend, takes care of the whole family.

But let's face it - he doesn't specialize in updos. I was rather (no, almost extremely) disappointed with how he did my hair for prom. It was not at all what I expected, and just wasn't what I was going for.

That in mind - I'm really really reluctant to have him do my hair for my wedding.

But my mother mentioned it to him - cause he's a family friend.

However - I really don't like his idea of an updo.

So... I really want to reach for someone who can handle my hair type, and do what I want for my big deal, not tell me how they see it - and fail at executing the look I want.

But if I don't use the family friend, I feel like I'm going to step on toes and hurt someone's feelings. I hate (no, despise how he does highlights too - they look like zebra streaks because he goes too brigh tof a blonde).

What do I say, do to stop this form being a confrontation? I'd like to continue using him on a regular basis.

Lie and tell him you won free wedding hair by a great bridal hair stylist at the bridal show next week. I'm not even joking. I told a dj whose feelings I didn't want to hurt that I won a free dj, which I did so it wasn't a blatant lie but I also told another person I know who does services that I won something else and I didn't. Ok, I know someone is going to post that I'm wrong for lying but the person I know really wasn't hurt by it since I 'won it.'

Totally on board with this option! My other suggestion is to be straight with him (total different end of the spectrum lol) and say, 'I think you do great haircuts so you'll always be my guy, but I have a specific style in mind and I know this hair designer has done exactly what I want on other brides and it held up all night blah blah.' I think he'll probably understand because you're still explaining he has your business on a regular basis - I know a lot of hairdressers who specialize in the everyday and referred me to other stylists for the fancy stuff.

This is perfect! Just a little white lie.
