because their petals are so thin and delicate adn the head of a hydrangeas is so big that it weighs down some making it look frail. if you compare the thickness of hte petals of a hydragea to a rose or calla lily, for example, you would be able to see a significant difference. a rose or calla lily will last a lot longer than a hydrangea. but i do see it in bouquets or centerpieces, nonetheless. i'm sure your respectable florist can work her magic. good luck.

If you keep them with water they will last longer- they have to have enough water. BRIDES magazine mentioned in this past issue that Hydrangeas are one of the flowers that isn't supposed to wilt.

I don't think that is true at all. At least I did not have that problem. The hydrageas from my wedding looked great over a week later.

Excuse me while I jump in here, but I am thinking of switching to hydrangeas. Are they more expensive than most flowers? They are in season for my wedding, but I'm just looking to get an idea of whether or not I will be spending more than I anticipated?

They're more expensive per stem. However, one stem of hydrangea = about the fullness of 4-5 roses so ultimately they're actually a little cheaper.
And I too am having hydrangea and have not heard that they do not last long. My florist was honest with me about some of the other flowers I wanted (esp tulips) in telling me they're not the best for weddings but he didn't say anything about hydrangea.

My hydrangea bouquet was full and healthy in the July heat and humidity all day and all night! In fact, it looked great the next day too!

I think it would depend on the temperature of the room you keep the flowers in. If you brought the flowers outside in the cold and then brought them back inside to a semi-warm temperature, there may be some sort of 'flower trauma'. I am not an authority but it sort of makes sense. I know I get a lil worn out when I go from one temperature to another.

Ditto here. I think my florist said something about wrapping the stems in cotton that was soaked with water. That way they can continue to get moisture.

I read that too and I was so happy because my BMs bo-ks are hydrangeas.

Re: hydrangeas - is it true they don't last long?
I was a BM a few years ago and had a bq with hydrangeas - its was July 4 and it hit 100 degrees - the flowers arrived around noon and were still beautiful when the wedding ended after midnight...
She used John from Flower Michele - here is a picture...
I am sure a reputable florist can make them last through the wedding.
I grew up with hydrangea bushes in our backyard and we often cut them and brought them into the house. They looked great for a few days, but they definitely don't last as long as other flowers past a couple of days and once they start to wilt, they go quickly. But if you only need them for one day, they should be fine. I think they are beautiful and I would have used them if I got married in the summer.

Bride's magazine qoutes they are very hardy, i saw them at a wedding last year...they need to be in water at all times when not being used. It's my mom's favorite, so I have seen it. They wilt quickly and come back just as quick, and they drink A LOT of water!!!
