Hypoglycemia

Does anybody have it? What was the test like? What did the doctor prescribe? (change of diet?)

I'm pretty sure I have it and want to get tested (if my stupid doctor's office will ever return my phone calls!)

ETS that I posted this on the wrong boards. I meant to do NWR. Oops!

Re: Hypoglycemia

my fh has it. the test was about 5 hours long of taking blood. the doctor told him he had to change his diet and not to go longer than 2-3 hours without eating, or else it will turn into diabetes.

How did he change his diet? What does he eat now?

Re: Hypoglycemia

I have hypoglycemia. I had to take a 3 hour GTT test and then a 5 GTT hour (GTT=Glucose Tolerance Test) because it was suspected the worst drop in my blood sugar would be after the 3rd or 4th hour. It was. The lifestyle changes that were recc. to me were eating 5-6 small meals a day to keep my sugar level steady. The smaller meals should not add up to more than you would eat in 3 normal meals. Do not eat many carbs/sugar since they will cause a rise and then a fast fall to your sugar level. I was seeing an endocrinologist when first diagnosed, but I chose to stop going when I felt I had it under control. He had me go in once a month to weigh me and talk about problems, etc. I had to check my sugar any time it felt low. I got a machine with test strips and lancets to do this. It is really no big deal. Now that I am comfortable with how much sugar I can handle and the first signs of a sugar attack, I no longer carry the machine with me. I know to have a few ounces of fruit juice immediately. You should keep a diary of food intake and symptoms. If you record your sugar level when you feel any symptoms, you will learn what your trigger foods are. I think you are 50% more likely to develop diabetes if you have hypoglceima. There is also diabetes in my family so I keep a close check on my weight. FM me if you have any more ??'s.

Victoria, there you are! I have never met anyone who actually has this condition! (Not counting people who use insulin) What is the lowest your sugar has ever dropped to, and what symptoms do you show? Everyone and thier mother actually thinks they have this, not knowing that sugar normally drops and falls after eating carbs, and they wonder why after they ate like a loaf of bread, they fall asleep.
There is a lot of controversy about whether or not this condtion is real or not, some believe that people are 'overreacting' to a natural swing in blood sugar, but there are people who pass out from low sugar. There is not much research on this (aside from diabetics), but there are other disorders that people attributed to psychological conditions years ago, that they now know are not. My FSIL has Crohn's disease which they know now is a serious physical condition that kills you if untreated. They used to say it was all in your head, and still to this day people make comments to her that she doesnt need medicine if she relaxes (she had surgery since she was so bad). Good luck with this, and stay healthy!
