Does anyone have an underactive thyroid? I do and a doctor told my mom that this would make it harder to conceive without drugs to correct the thyroid problem. Does anyone know anything about this?

No idea. A good friend of mine has this problem and she is TTC so I'll ask her. Good luck!

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
I have hypothyroid. I got preggo first serious attempt, but then I m/c. I know there are other girls on here with children, who have hypo too. I have heard it is harder but i don't know for sure.
Are you on synthroid? How long have you had it? What do you mean medicine to correct it?

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
I was tested a while back and I only have a slight case - nothing that warrants medicine. Apparently there are pills you take to restore the proper balance or something - I'm not sure what they are called or how they work because my doctor said that it wasn't absolutely necessary for me. But I was young then and I may look into it again now.
Do you know if the Hypothyroid is the reason you miscarried?

The doctor doesn't think that was the reason. Who knows. Are you able to control it by diet- avoid broccolli, spinach and other iodine blockers! You will probably need to be on synthroid or one of the others once you get preggo. I know that when a couple is having infertility issues this is one of the first things that they test for. I have a great endo, if you would like to go see him. He is in Great Neck but definitely worth the trip. I am happy to say that I had a SEVERE case and I have been stable for almost a year now.

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
I am hypothyroid and got pregnant on first try and now going strong at a little over 18 weeks. I suggest you start taking meds if you are not already on them... the doc is right, if you are not taking anything to regulate it you will have a hard time trying to conceive. The meds are no big deal, just take one a day... it did take the docs a few tries to find what works for me and so far so good AND you continue it throughout your pregnancy having your TSH checked every 3 months or so. Hope this helped, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
KP - just to be safe, I'd definitely have my TSH level checked, especially if you were very young the first time you were diagnosed. As far as I thought this condition does not go away.

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
Obviously, I am not TTC right now or anytime in the near future, but I have an underactive thyroid and have been on synthroid for the past 10 years. I've always been nervous that it would effect my ability TC. I was diagnosed young, but have been stable for the past 8 years. baby dust to you!!

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
Common symptoms.
Extreme exhaustion (it is like nothing I ever felt before)
Weight Gain
Dry skin
Depression
Hair loss
Yellowing of the skin
Inablility to handle cold weather
Memory problems
and a difference in your menstrual cycles.
I hope this helps.
Remember you may not have all of these symptoms or just a few. I know for me and my numbers were WAY off I had all but the last one.

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
for me, I am always, always cold - even in the summer I keep the heat on or a blanket - it's very disturbing
I am also very tired all the time - staying up past 11pm sometimes is a struggle

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
Not that we're TTC for atleast another year but DH has hypothyroid. Wonder if that would affect our TTC.
He was tested just to see which gland it is.

I am a little confused what you mean, which gland it is. Your thyroid is your thyriod?
Is he one medication and regulated. If he is, it should not be a problem for you guys, it is more difficult for women that have it sometimes because the thyroid controls almost everything in your body including your ovulation.
Mimms-- remember if you do get PG that as soon as it is confirmed call your endo you will have to be monitored closely to check your levels. For me I only have to go once every 6 months now- unless something is really off, but if I get pg he will want to see me montly to bi monthly.

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
ugh....i remember those symtoms well---yuck---they think mine was caused by a virus and i remember falling asleep in class and feeling like garbage. my periods were all screwy and my neck was sooooooooooooo swollen they thought i had mono--turned out it was my thyroid. i had weight gain as well.
i am regulated now and have been for awhile, just hope it doesn't effect me when we want ttc a million years from now! LOL

Re: Hypothyroid and TTC
Just want to add, I did not have most of those symptoms listed, I only had maybe 3 or 4, as long as you are regulated you should NOT have a problem conceiving, this was one of my BIGGEST worries and I worried for nothing.... I am 19 weeks pregnant and have to have my levels tested every three months... my ob tells me every three months is fine... I do not see an endocrinologist either.
