I almost got mauled by a bear!

Okay, not really, but while driving to a deposition in PA yesterday a bear ran across the street right in front of my car It was a big bear cub, maybe a bear teenager. Bigger than the cute little cubs you see on Discovery, but small enough to scare the heck out of me. I was already leaning hard on my brake and I was afraid that Momma or Pappa bear was about to follow baby bear out of the woods and right smack into my Altima.

Luckily I managed to avoid hitting it, but I am still a little freaked out. I mean, really, what is a BEAR doing running across a street. Shouldn't it be in a zoo somewhere?

I am used to keeping a look out for deer in certain areas, but this is a little much

OMG!!! That would have scared the c*r*a*p out of me!!! Thank goodness you didn't hit it... imagine the damage he would have caused?!

BTW Becky, guess who's wedding banns I saw in the church's bulletin this weekend???

Did you hear on the news last week, In Jersey this family was cooking brownies for a bday party, and a HUGE bear came out of the woods and into their kitchen and ate their brownies!!
They were all scared to death, call the cops,and the bear had to be killed ! They called it a Category 1 Bear or something.. how sad..

Thank God no one was hurt though, and im sure the bear would have done that again...

Now wouldn't that just take the cake... long-distance planning, wedding stress up the yin yang...and then you get mauled by a bear on top of it!!

Sorry to be facetious. It would have scared the bejezus out of me too.

I had a similar encounter when I was a kid, camping in the Adirondacks. Only instead of being in a car, I was just walking down a path and the huge black bear was walking about 4 feet behind me. That was a memorable camping trip!

That must have been scary. My uncle has bears that go right in his backyard. As a matter of fact the other day he called to tell me that there was a picture of a bear in the NY Post which they took in his backyard.

OH WOW!!! Glad to hear that you are okay. I heard the same report that Anna mentioned. That is pretty scary!!

We unfortunately have bear in our backyard pretty frequently as well--
Last night as I was driving home I saw one peering over the guard rail (as if he was going to cross the road) I ALWAYS mistake them for black dogs at first-- I told DH last night that the minute one ends up on our deck or front porch I am calling the realtor!!!!
My famiy thinks we are crazy as do I am sometimes but I love where we live and our house, etc---

Did the bear ask you to do your part in preventing forest fires?

OMG Becky, I know how you feel!!! That happened to us going to my MIL's house, who lives up in the Poconos!! It walked right in front of our car and I screamed 'a bear' and Joe goes 'where?'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The friggin thing was HUGE and BLACK and because it was pitch dark up there, Joe didn't see it!! I was petrified to get out of the car to run up the stairs to his mother's house, but it was either that or stay in the car all night! And the friggin thing had turned over the garbage in front of his mother's and destroyed some other stuff.

My MIL actually hit one with her car recently, but she thinks she hurt the poor thing. Her car had like $1500 damage to it, but the bear went back into the woods. She also hit a deer. I think she should move or give up driving up there!

I'm sorry you got scared, but I'm glad you and your car weren't hurt!!! Can you imagine having to deal with that all the time? I don't know how my MIL does it! I swear, I saw wild turkeys up there (which I had no clue what the hell they were) and the other day when we were there, there was this big a$$ raccoon sitting in front of the door looking for food!

I can't believe how many of us have had run-ins with a bear. Maybe we should start an I-almost-got-mauled-by-a-bear support group

In retrospect, it is funny, but I was petrified when it happened. Very glad to be back home, far away from wild bears.

Jen - were my bans printed this week? I didn't know that. I have to call my parents and yell at them. They go every Sunday at 7:30. What were you even doing there this weekend. Shouldn't you have been at St. P & J???
