Re: I AM HAVING SUCH A HARD TIME FINDING
Argh! The forum just ate my long response.
FH and I just found our new apartment and are moving from Long Beach to Lynbrook next week!
We found our apt on Craig's List, but the owner contacted us. We posted a detailed 'Housing Wanted' ad (you have to renew the posting every week) and had several appropriate places contact us.
Look at www.benartproperties.com - They have buildings all over, including Hempstead and Valley Stream. I looked at the Valley Stream ones and they were pretty nice. They are within walking distance to the train and affordable. The super is very nice. Also, their web site indicates they are willing to work with those who require a guarantor or something for credit / income requirements.
We also looked at Fairhaven Apartments in Mineola, NY. They were nice, and they also have a building in Carle Place that we did not see. There is also Town House Apartments in Mineola and a few others. (Google apartments mineola, ny or something similar). I'd just start looking up apt buildings and contacting them directly.
You can also get a realtor, but the fee is likely to be between 1 and 2 months' rent. Average seemed to be about 1 month, but the max they can charge is 15% of the annual rent! We are moving to a 2 family house, so we worked directly with the owners, who (as we lucked out) are incredibly nice, cool people about our age.
Good luck. I just went through this, so I understand your frustration! FM me if I can help - or if you just wat to vent about the process!!!

Re: I AM HAVING SUCH A HARD TIME FINDING
Oh, I also had luck finding the names of apartment buildings, etc. at web sites like rent.com or apartments.com -- I never did any of the pay services, though! I just used the free searches.

Re: I AM HAVING SUCH A HARD TIME FINDING
My FH just moved into an apt. in Mineola. We had a hard time contacting people as well. They never got back to us!!! So we just drove around and we saw someone outside the apt. building and asked for the supers #...It's a good size one bedroom, for $1,500.
