I am Sad.....

Original post by HeatherandNick

From Sept - June I took Justin to Mommy and Me on Fridays. We had a great time. Bonding, playing, singing, doing arts and crafts etc...

Now since he is getting older, he is able to go into the Slow Separation Classroom. This week we just started the summer session, it is for 6 weeks and meets twice a week. Its not the same as M&M, I am still in the classroom, but can't help him with anything. If he wants/needs anything he goes to his teacher (there are 4 of them since their are 10 kids in the class). He is still loving every minute of it. He didn't even seem to miss me not being there

Next week I only stay for half the class, by the third week they should be ready to fully separate and be on their own. Justin will do fine with that part - I am more worried about me!!! I know the point behind this is to have him ready for nursery school in September, but I feel like I am losing my baby and he is only 2 1/2

Re: I am Sad.....

Wow! What a great welcome to new parents ... I'm definitely going to save that one!

Heather ... in my school, all of the special area teachers gather in the morning to help the kindergarteners on the first day. But we really all know that its more for the parents . (Most of the kids are lined up & so excited and ready to begin ... its the mom's that need support!)

But you'll be so proud of him when he transitions into school like a pro! Be strong ... there are so many wonderful moments ahead of you .. just wait until he comes home with a book he can READ!!!!!

Re: I am Sad.....

Jenn ... I have to agree with everyone, you are a kind, thoughtful, and awesome teacher!

Heather ... I really can't empathize with your situation yet. I can imagine that it must be so hard, but you will both move past this and grow together. Justin will always need you!
Be proud for he is one cutie pie!

Re: I am Sad.....

Thanks everyone. You make me feel so loved!
I cried too, the first (few!) times I read that essay.

Heather, the fact that Justin seperates from you so easily just shows what a great mom you are. He feels so loved and secure that he knows he can leave you, and you will be there when he comes back. It's a wonderful thing!

Christine, at my school the special area teachers also are on hand to help the 'children' ( ) seperate on the first few days. It really helps make smooth transitions! We always find a handful of parents lurking in the bushes by the windows, and my heart always goes out to them. You just KNOW it's the ones with their first or only child starting school.

I will be one of those lurking parents.

Or one of those parents following the school bus.

Re: I am Sad.....

Anna, in Commack they ALL follow the bus, armed with cameras and camcorders! You won't be alone!

Re: I am Sad.....

Jenn ... so true!!! Lots of lurkers .... but I find the ones who are really having the hardest times are the mom's sending their LAST little one off! It marks such a change in your life ... I can only imagine how hard it is.

PS .... excellent point about children who have little trouble separating feeling loved and secure! I think that's the biggest compliment you can give. Its proof that you're doing an excellent job raising an independent, self reliant child!

In our school .... we let the photographers & videographers have their way. Then on Know Your School Night (like Meet the teachers) ... we turn the cameras on them! Its so funny ... the pictures of the parents all sitting in those little chairs!

Christine, that's SO funny about the cameras on Open School Night!!! I'm going to bring that suggestion up at my school. I think it would be fun to do!

Re: I am Sad.....

awww heather.. I went through this with my son, not only durring pre-school but for nusery too..
It was hard and I remember that day when I had to walk out and leave him behind and there he was having a ball and I was crying like a baby..
I can tell you though, it doesn't take that long to get used to it.. after a few days, I adjusted and became just so proud of my big boy.
The couple of hours to myself also were nice, as much as I always missed him.
You'll be ok!

Re: I am Sad.....

this subject really tugs at my heart. I had a harder time walking to the parking lot on Juliannes first day in daycare ( 6 months old) than she did.. she was smiling, giggling and squealing at the other kids in her classroom.
Now it is a bit easier...Rob drops off/picks up every day but Fri when I get to do it. she is having a ball...and comes home tuckered out. Most nights I just get to change her and nurse her and she falls asleep betw 630-8pm...and then we have our own quiet dinner. wow!
I was crying at the attached story about the beanstalk...I'm a bit worse- Im imagining her sweet 16 party...and seeing her walk down the aisle to get married! (such a mush!)
