But whats the best way to ask un-attached guests to not bring dates?

should I just honestly say we are strapped for seats???

Also - will they have fun? Who will they dance with???

You don't invite them with a guest. Period.

Ahhh yes, this is a generally sticky subject on these boards.

I simply did not put 'And guest' on the envelope, and spoke to people who I cared about personally. I told them that I could only invite so many people, and that I was sorry. Many of these people were just happy to be invited.

I am inviting everyone with a date, knowing some people will come alone. I do not think anyone would just 'find' someone to bring if they are 'unattached'. IMHO, I do not think it is right to invite someone and say they cannot bring a guest but that is just me.

I think not writing 'and guest' is the best way to go about this. I think ChristineAEV also noted that on the response card she added a line saying 'x number of seats have been reserved in your honor'

That seems to make sense too ....good luck

I just told a coworker - and she completely understands! She is not engaged yet, but knows it's coming down the pike, and is actually relieved I am doing this, because she will have to do it with us at work as well...

It made me feel a little better...

and I can't invite people with guests because our setaing is limited, and parents are paying for the wedding, and want to invite their people too... have to make some compromises here...

FH feels the same way you do about the 'and guest' part. We have had major disagreements over this in the past few days. However, I have to disagree with the part about people not 'finding' someone just to bring to the wedding. (of course you know your guests best, I just mean I disagree with the comment as a blanket statement about everyone) My cousin hired an escort to accompany him to my sister's wedding. No matter what FH says, I am NOT inviting him with a guest (and I don't care that my aunt is fuming mad over this either!)

People do not like to go to weddings alone - especially when they may not know everyone there - plus, it's pathetic to dance alone... unless you are doing the dance in groups thing...

But what can I do?

Yup...and then if you have room as the RSVPS come in then you can let them bring someone (if you so desire)

We kind of verbally mentioned to friends that people who weren't in relationships would be invited solo. And on the ivites, we just didn't put 'and guest.' I don't think it's a big deal to not invite everyone with a guest, unless they won't know other peole there.
