I bombed my LSAT

I bombed my LSAT

Well....I just got my LSAT score and it was only a 150. I can't believe it, I did so much better in my review class. I don't know if I should take it again in February or if I should just apply with this score. But I am afraid I will not be accepted anywhere with this score. I really want to apply to Hofstra and St. John's being they are local to where I work and I will only be doing part-time law.
I am so upset and right before Christmas. This *****!

Don't sweat the 150. If memory serves me correctly, my LSAT score was 149. I applied and was accepted to:
NY Law School, Brooklyn Law School, Cardozo, Hofstra (my alma mater), Touro, CUNY Law School, Boston University Law School, St. Johns, and ummmmm, I don't remember the 10th one.

However, if you want NYU or Yale, then take it again.

I found this on www.powerscore.com

How is the LSAT scored?

On a scale of 120 to 180, with 120 being the lowest score and 180 the highest score. The median score is approximately 151. Only about 2% of all test takers receive a score in the 170’s, and almost 70% of all test takers fall into the 140 to 160 score range.

I think you'll be OK.

Don't worry that is good score. Def apply to Hofstra and St. Johns. LSAT scores is not the only thing they look at. GPA and extra-curricular activities...

I went to sent St John, they also have admissions for January if you do not get in for Sept.
My friend got weight listed to Hofstra and at a week or two before the program started she got in. So don't lose hope.

Good Luck!!

i think it's all relative to how well you did in undergrad and your extra-curricular activities. i hope i dont get flamed for this, but if you are a minority a lot of schools will be more lenient on your lsat score. many law schools are trying to increase their minority student admissions so if your lsat score is a little lower than their average, i would definitely apply anyway. but with that score you should be able to get into a 3rd/4th tier law school. If you're not satisfied w/going to a third/fourth tier school, and you know that you can do better on your lsat, i would recommend retaking it again. good luck!

If you think you can do better, I would retake. A 150 isn't that bad if you have a good GPA and other good factors, but a higher LSAT score can still make a huge difference... Practically all of my friends are applying to or starting or are in the middle of law school, so I feel your pain. I would retake if I were you though.

150 is not a bad as you think - I think the median score for most St. John' students was not much higher the year that I applied.

Re: I bombed my LSAT

I know times have changed since I went to law school (LSAT scoring was totally different, too). Anyway, there was no rhyme and reason to which schools I got into. I got into almost all the schools I applied to, then got wait listed and subesquently rejected at the school I'd picked for a 'safe bet.' Apply wherever you might want to go. I wish I'd done more 'reach' schools as I think back that I may have gotten in.

Also, I went to a school that has a great reputation but really isn't known in NY. That was kind of a mistake. The plus side is that their bar pass rate was really high at that time and the curriculum was very solid! I ended up as a visting student back here at Hofstra my last year. I missed NY!!!!!

SOrry! Its ok, you can always take it again. I would take it again if I were you. the lsat cut-offs have gotten pretty high now. I think st johns was a 159 or something last year.

But don't stress, just take it after a break. I have a friend who got a 147 or something the first time and then a 172 the next

I don't really know if there is a 'cut-off' score, although all schools have their own set of standards. I have really good work experience and had awesome grades in undergrad so I am hoping they will weigh that as well.

I think I am going to apply with the score I have and hope for the best.

I think she just panicked the first time!

BY cut-off score, I meant the average lsat score accepted. I know they also look at grades and such, i've been through the process

but if you choose to apply, good luck!

A 150 is not bad at all but I would retake it. I got a 157 and 3.7 GPA and denied from Brooklyn Law. Only one I applied to because I didnt want to waste $100's with that score. I didn't have any extra-curriculars though

Re: I bombed my LSAT

IF i remember correctly, if you retake the test the scores get averaged... A 150 is a fine score, depending upon your grades, work experience, etc.

Good work experience will def help you. You should also consider applying to New York Law School and Touro. You are better off applying to as many schools to improve your chances. They are all good schools.

150 is not a bad score. You should definitely continue to apply. As many others noted, the schools look at a your undergraduate work, work experience, etc. Your acceptance is not based soley on your LSAT score.

Re: I bombed my LSAT

i just looked at usnews and world reports

it says that for st johns you need between a 158-163

hofstra requires b/w a 155-159

if you have a high undergrad gpa i think it will boost your chances of getting into hofstra.

One of my best friends got a 162 and was rejected from Cardozo this year - so they're def. looking at LSAT scores more now. I'd say to retake it if you were doing better on your practice exams - but keep in mind that they average your scores when you take it more than once. So if your score is only 1-2 points higher on ur practice exams - it might not be worth it to take it again.

hope this helps!

I haven't looked at those stats since I was applying to law school but if I remember correctly those numbers are the range for the middle 50% of the class (25th to 75th percentiles), so they exclude the top and bottom quarters, so this doesn't mean you're out, nor does it mean you're guaranteed in if you fall within that range. I was in range for a lot of schools and above for quite a few and I didn't get accepted at a lot of schools (much to my surprise) despite that. That just shows you that although schools look at LSAT scores a lot (because it's important for their rankings), it's not the only thing they look at, and it couldn't be because they know the test is flawed and only tests how well you can take the LSAT and little else. They'd miss out on too many good people if they over-relied on the test. And, schools vary with how much credit they give to LSAT scores too. Some of the better schools may actually be more forgiving because they're not scrambling as much to climb the rankings... just food for thought. Do your research, apply smart, and apply around - and think about picking a few reaches (second tier schools and up for example) as well as a few likely sure things. The more schools, the better. I'm sure you'll be fine.
