I bought the Eukanuba Natural Lamb and Rice. It had Added Vitamins and Minerals.
I was wondering the best way to switch Scooby over from his current chicken based food so he won't have an upset tummy. He's a 10 month old Maltese.
Does anyone know what changed I should expect? .... more redness on the fur around his eyes? .... change in BM's? ... anything else? The package says he won't need his vitamin tablets any more. He loves them so and I have a large bottle. I hope I'm doing the right thing by changing his food.
Thanks.

Re: I bought Scooby new food
Your supposed to mix it with his old food and add more of the new food and less of the old food gradually after a few days. So like for a cup of food do 3/4 old food 1/4 new food for a few days and see how he is, if he seems fine themn 1/2old 1/2 new wait for a few days then 1/4 old and 3/4 new etc etc

Oh i didnt know. All dogs? Scooby seems to have an allergy and it was suggested that it may be the chicken in his food. I was told lamb was a good alternative. I'll watch him carefully. He just finished his dinner and he seemed to like it. I mixed a 1/4 lamb kibbles with 3/4 chicken kibbles.
Thank you very much for telling me.

My little guy had a chicken problem - the vet recommended switching him to Lamb & Rice instead - he's had the lamb for over a year now, and it's doing the trick!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I've been worried since I read the last post. Do you mind telling me a few things? What kind of dog do you have? What symptoms did he have? Scooby had an inflammation of the ears a few weeks ago. The vet said it was due to allergies, but he didn't definitely pin point food as the cause, but said it could be a possibility. Since then he has started licking everything - from the rug, to the side of the cabinets and furniture legs. Not biting but licking. He also started sticking his tongue in and out of his mouth repeatedly after each meal. Just today this exact topic came up on an online Maltese forum and they said his tongue is probably itchy. This made so much sense, I decided to go ahead and try a different food. I'm crossing my fingers we are as fortunate as you were with the lamb and rice.

Funny you mentioned the redness on the fur around the eyes when he tears. Is that good or bad cause Chewie has been getting it lately. I don't know what it is. TY!

Valentinegirl, I can only tell you what I've heard or experienced myself. All breeds are different and all dogs are different, but the vet did tell me that all white dogs are prone to it and there is no sure way to whiten the fur. There are lots of methods, but nothing works for sure. As for Scooby, he started getting alot of symptoms around the same time that his ears became inflammed. The vet was certain it was due to allergies and he put Scooby on meds. The pain has disappeared, but the other symptoms have returned after the medication was over. He is licking his paws and everything else he could get to, he is thrusting his tongue in and out continually for some time after each meal (scratching it maybe?), and the tear stains are just getting worse. I've read - but can't be sure it's true - that chicken causes allergies in some dogs. I'm trying Eubanuba's lamb and rice. I'm hoping this new food will help with the other symptoms. I really don't hold out hope for the tear stains, but it doesn't hurt to cross my fingers. I'll let you know. In addition, I've read that high mineral content in the water can cause this. Some people try distilled bottled water. I don't see a difference with it though.
Good luck with your dog. He's adorable. If he'll sit for it, you may try a little cornstarch with your fingers to dry the area. Don't get it in his eyes, but get it where the dampness accumulates. At least it looks better for the moment and you'll feel like you are doing something.

LI Mom - I have a boston terrier. He's getting old - he's about 7 now.
The chicken was doing horrible things to his stomach - nothing as far as itchiness or anything like that (at least that I know of!)
Anyway, he likes the lamb & rice better - and so do we.
