I bought the SBD book. I think I will incorporate it into my WW
I'm not going to tell my WW leader I'm doing it (they hate when they hear that) but I will still go to the meetings and weigh in. I can't do WW anymore the 'normal way'. I hate journaling - I never remember to do it. I thought I liked the flexibility WW gave me but that was 2 yrs ago before I gained a lot more weight. And if I don't journal I eat more. So I went to the store today and got alot of veggies. We have low fat deli meats in the fridge already and chicken and turkey and I bought minced sirloin as well.
It's going to be very hard not having breads these next 2 weeks, but I really want to get a jumpstart on losing weight. I never liked the idea of taking certain foods out of one's 'diet' but with my crohn's disease, I've done tons of research and found that people that eat less carbs (ie: refined breads and refined sugars and potatos) felt better and since I'm not feeling so hot lately, maybe this will help me in that area too.
I will let you know how I do. I would really love any good thoughts you guys could throw my way this week! Thanks Mary

Shamma,
It is the South Beach Diet.
I'm just having alot of problems with WW - I forget to put foods down in journal - I never can figure out how much points some things I get at the cafeteria at work are - and it's become TOO flexible for me. I guess in my crazy mind if I am on a diet that says 'you can have that cookie just factor the points in' I go a bit overboard. It's an issue with me - I have no willpower.
SBD is like Atkins but their underlying theories are a bit different. With SBD it's no fruits for 2 weeks which I'm not really in total agreement with but I'll try it and see. No refined sugars and refined carbs at all. No starches for 2 weeks. Most veggies OK. Lean meats OK. After 2 weeks you can start back with some fiber packed breads (ie: whole wheat/pumpernicket/oat bread). Eggs - are ok. Olive and canola oils are OK.
Actually my dad's heart doctor suggested the diet to him. I'm going to give him the book when I am done with it. He thinks the doctor is telling him to go on a fad diet so he won't do it. Mr. Stubborn. =) When he told me about it I researched it and reasd some posts on here and decided what the hell. It would really give me alot of confidence in the weight loss dept.
So far so good I think. I had egg whiltes for b-fast today. I bought salad with tuna and sugar free fat free soy ginger salad dressing for lunch and celery and fat free cream cheese for a snack.
I'll keep ya posted. mary

Mary, thanks for explaining. Anytime I hear of these plans that restrict you from eating certain things and what not it scares me, b/c it makes me wonder how how realistic is this?? and how long can you live your everyday life like this.
Willpower is indeed something, and so is the mind, you have to set a goal that you want to reach and not let anything get in the way, not even an extra cookie. I think WW program is awesome you have to put some work in to make it work. I think anything that does not teach you how to make wiser choices and instead let you eliminate things does nothing. IMO
Let us know how the SBD goes. I wish you all the best.

About restricting foods - to me it seems like people who are obese have a wacked blood sugar level. To get it balanced out you have to cut out sugars totally at least for a little bit. That's probably why the no fruits for 2 weeks thing. Yes fruits very good with vitamins, but most veggies have the same vitamins and they are allowed for those first 2 weeks. Fruits are introduced back into diet after first 2 weeks. If I wasn't eating crappy food that had alot of refined sugar my blood sugar level would not be off in the first place (well I assume it is, I haven't had it checked) and obviously wouldn't have a weight problem (if I wasn't eating the crap). So to balance it out one has to stop most foods with high amount of sugar in them - no matter what it is.
That's how I'm seeing it. If he said no fruits at all, ever and ever, I'd think 'yeah nice fad diet' and not do it.

Mary, so when the 2 weeks are up will you not go back to eating how you usually do?? Will you not be right back where you started??? What is your goal on this program???
Re: I bought the SBD book. I think I will incorporate it into my WW
i am usually against diets that restrict certain items, but DH and I both did the SBD...
and its not that we lost weight (just a few pounds) but we got rid of our processed food craving...we haven't been to McDonalds since the summer (something that DH could easily talk me into)...even friday we were SO hungry...and we both looked at McDonalds and growned...thank goodness we found something else...
we only eat whole wheat bread (and it has to be 100%) we do not miss the white at all... we eat all processed foods...prepared from natural ingredients...something that SBD emphasizes
there are so many bad habits that were broke in those 2 weeks...I am in total agreement of it...
DH's father died young of a heart attack...and that is a major concern for me that DH will have heart issues....but this diet may have saved his life...
I don't know if its related, but since the SBD, he has cut back to 1-3 cigarettes a day...
Re: I bought the SBD book. I think I will incorporate it into my WW
my GYN also said that given up carbs for 1-2 weeks is OK...remember humans only started eating grains 8-10000 years ago...thats really not long enough for evolution to adapt to carb overload

Shamma, Im' sorry I wrote too fast. (fingers type quicker than my brain thinks! lol) I meant that after the first 2 weeks I can start eating fruit again, and some high fiber carbs, ie: whole wheat bread, oatmeal, that sort of thing. You eat whatever you could in 'phase 1' which is the first 2 weeks (ie: veggies, lean meats and some other low-fat things like cheeses, etc). the time from the end of Phase 1 until your goal I think is considered phase 2.
I haven't read the whole book so i don't know if i'm 100% right on all of this but that's the jist.
=)

shamma - I first thought the same thing, which is why I don't agree with Aitkin's. It was too limiting for too long - to me, that's unhealthy.
But the SBD slowly re-introduces the good carbs back into your diet, but in a controlled way. You couldn't (or shouldn't) go back to eating a bowl of pasta every day, but you can have some carbs, fruit, etc each day.

perfectly said teri...simple carbs really have no nutritional value...and we eat so many of them as Americans...giving it up is a good thing
