There is something that really truly saddens me. Several months ago, our nation witnessed a foul, disgusting, disturbing horrific act on a young American named Nick Berg. Plainly put, he was beheaded. I'm sorry, but as a civilized person, I find that to be a sick, sick act! However, back in April, his horrific death was the cover of every newspaper and news magazine. About a dozen beheadings later, these acts of violence pass through our eyes and we think, oh how sad. Has something like that become just another thing we Americans have become accustomed to? Is this now an everyday thing such as 14 year old girls having babies or child pornography? Our nation just goes on...as does our leader. I will come out and say, yeah, I'm a Kerry supporter...hate me love me, whatever, I'm a teacher, Bush clearly doesn't support teachers. But this is killing me. Another headless body found wrapped in an American flag...yeah, that's okay, right? That is something we're going to shrug our shoulders to, right? If that is the case, our country is doing something as evil as what those monsters are doing when they hack off someone's head. I'm sorry, but I've had enough of this...I can't even IMAGINE the awful, painful, gutwrenching anxiety that someone must feel knowing that is their fate...that is how they are going to die. We live in one of the most technologically advanced and supposedly one of the most civilized nations in the world, and yet, our citizens are being put to death in the most uncivilized way. Am I the only one who finds that wrong?

i don't think hearing that an American or any other captive was beheaded or killed is common place..i am always deeply upset and saddened whenever i see these things...The shock never changes.. But as an American, i also feel extremely helpless. There is really nothing i can do to stop it. Sure we can vote a new president in but that doesn't really make me feel any better..

jen, I understand what you are saying. I guess what is bothering me is how numb to the horrors that everyone is becoming. It is like something that sooooo does not belong in reality is happening at such a frequent occurance that so many people don't even give it another thought...and maybe it is what you said-that you feel helpless and I guess that is how all of us feel. But at the same time, it is so sad.

To some extent, Psychologists say it is a coping mechanism we have as people. There is no question that such a barbaric horrible act is evil, like 9/11 or any time innocents are targeted. But it would be impossible to cope with day to day life if your insides churned with fear every moment that something was happening on the news. For example, it is how the people of Iraq and Israel function -- otherwise, there would be no survival. I wish to be clear, I disagree with the war, and shake whenever I see such things on the news. But as far as evolution, this is why we do become inure -- we cannot always live on high alert ... I hope that this ramble makes sens.

I feel exactly the same way. I think it is a coping mechanism, but I think it's also like we don't care if it's not in fornt of our faces. terrorism has been rampant around the world for a long time, and no one wanted to take any steps against it until it was staring us in the face...it is sad.
