I can't believe it, it must be a sign from God...

I can't believe it, it must be a sign from God...

Anyway, husband and I have been 'toying/exploring' the idea of possibly making a move out of state at some point within the next few years (depends on the trends of his business/if we can keep up after the baby is born, etc.). We were discussing Florida because of the great climate and Texas (although I'm not down with the frequent tornado warnings, etc.). Again, everything is speculation and the only people we shared our thoughts with were my parents (not his). He stopped over to his yesterday on some unrelated issue and they were discussing his brother and his wife and them possibly moving down to (of all places....) FLORIDA!!

Now we haven't spoken to his brother/sister in law in two years and I haven't spoken to ANY of his family (except his grandmother) since that point due to the constant b.s. we have had to endure from them...

If this isn't a sign from God that we're supposed to stay in NY or find another location to move to, I don't know what is....

Just had to share....and vent..

Florida is huge! Is he going to the same part of Florida you were considering?

The state could be the size of Canada and it's still too damn close for my taste!!

Ugh....but Florida is a big state so you wouldn't necessarily run into them too much.

However, I am a HUGE fan of Texas - lived there (Dallas and Houston) for a long time. I really miss it there.

Florida is not where you want to be!! I'm trying to get out!!

You dont want to risk it !!
Stuart and Miami are actually pretty close!! Too close for comfort when it come to inlaws and BS!! Or anywhere that you would think about moving to in Florida!!

Florida is a big state though!

Have you considered Louisiana, N. or S. Carolina? Georgia?

I don't think you need to stay in NY if the brother is moving to Fla.

You don't need to move near them do you?

But here's some anyway, I'm sure you were pretty ticked off to hear of their plans since you guys wanted to do the same thing!

Briar Rose, can you tell me what the cons are? Seriously....

My husband is worried about LI's economy (well who isn't these days) and the potential dry up of his business (although he has other career opportunities to explore here). We're basically getting by, but there is little left around the waistband at the end of the month and with the baby coming, the purse strings are going to get that much tighter.

His approach is that 1.) We can sell our house and pay off a mortgage in full down there 2.) No state tax 3.) cost of living is cheaper, blah, blah, blah.

My idea on drawbacks is that 1.) say we do move there, buy a house in cash, etc. and think it sucks. We can NEVER come back and get what we have now (based on the current LI housing costs). 2.) What if we can't find jobs? Hate the Y/R heat? Make no friends? Our relationship has had many, many highs and lows and I'm deathly afraid of moving away from the only support I have (my family) and being stuck in a situation where I have the same problems/interference I've been struggling with since the day I said 'I do' (his family). And I'll be honest, there are days where I can't STAND him. Do I really want to be trapped all around, especially since his family will now have his ear and will no doubt be influencing him without the voice of reason from my family around. Even if they were across the state, the impact would be no less. I could see a difference in him when his parents first moved 3 towns away from us back in 2002. And that was with intervention from outside sources (friends, family, etc.). Ughhhh.....

Hmmm... I have read your posts about your in-laws and fully understand why you are rethinking Florida now. Have you considered Canada, by any chance

I hear it is just lovely there, this time of year

In all seriousness, based on your last post, you should probably try to stay close to your family or take some of them with you!

What about Atlanta or the Carolina's? In the Carolina's you would have to worry about Hurricanes

I would definitely check out Texas if I were you. My sister is moving there this June. She researched and went to look at Florida and Virginia and she just was not feeling it. I mean jobs and everything. She is moving to Houston and it is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

i'm sorry your plans have been thwarted. florida's really buggy too. that's why i can't move there. my grandmother used to live there and she had gigantic bugs in house (palmetto bugs?), not to mention the snakes and frogs outside.

anyway, i've heard the carolinas are really, really nice and have better weather. if you look at virginia i've heard the area around williamsburg is great.

i completely understand your fears about not having family and friends around. i lived in the dc metro area for 3 years, made no friends and missed my family terribly. it was the best day when i got in the truck and headed back to ny for good. never, never underestimate the impact of not having family around.

good luck with the decision.

oh and may i suggest flagstaff, az? it's so so pretty there!
