I can't believe what happened to DH and I last night!! (long)
I'm still reeling from this, and I'm getting mad all over again just remembering what happened! ![]()
Well, here's the story - it's really long, sorry!!
We are housesitting this week for DH's parents while they are on vacation - basically just taking in the mail and making sure the cat has enough food/water. They live in Oyster Bay, so last night around 11 we were heading home down 106, and since they're repaving the road, it was closed down to one lane - one very NARROW lane. We have an SUV, and even doing 30mph we were basically driving the shoulder the whole time. Suddenly one of the workers JUMPS in front of our car screaming and waving those orange construction flags! Scared the crap out of us and DH had to stop short just to avoid hitting her! We're assuming there's something wrong ahead for someone to stop us like this, but when DH opened the window, all we heard was this woman yelling and cursing at us!!!! She was literally bellowing curses at us to 'slow the F down' screaming that it's 35 miles per hour and that we shouldn't be driving so fast to stop short when she 'walked' in front of our car!!!!!!! All she was doing was screaming and cursing at us - I've never seen anything like that in my entire life, and we WERE NOT SPEEDING!!!!! We weren't doing anything to even be stopped by a construction worker, let alone be spoken to like that! This so-called 'woman' would have made a sailor blush with the things she was saying!! So DH got really mad (rightly so) and started yelling back telling her that we were only doing 30 and that some idiot was tailgaiting us the whole road, so go yell at him!! She didn't care, just kept screaming at us 'f'in slow down f'in 35 mph slow the f down, go kill someone in your own town'!!!!! Finally she moved to the side and let us go - but we were both so shellshocked at what had just happened!! The whole thing made no sense whatsoever, and you just don't TALK to people like that!!! She was cursing at us before we even opened the window - god forbid we had a child in the car who heard the garbage taht came out of her mouth!
Naturally, by the time we got home - we were beyond livid so we called the Department of Transportation directly to report this incident. Thankfully, we were able to get in touch with the 24 hour dispatch, who was extremely nice and apologized about what happened to us, but the person we'd need to speak with wouldn't be in till the morning. So she took our name and number and said she would have him contact us first thing in the morning. Sure enough, 9:05 I get a phone call and after I told him where it happened, he tells me that the people working that part of the road were not NYS DOT, they were contracted out through the union! Again, the man I spoke with was very nice, and he expressed genuine concern about what happened to DH and I - assuring us that he would personally contact the union with this incident and our complaint, and follow up with us. The whole thing is just so unbelievable!! So hopefully something will be done about this - I'd hate for that to happen to anyone else, and hopefully that horrible woman won't have the chance to do this to anyone else...
Like I said before, I'm still reeling from all of this. I was upset last night - it just makes me so sad to think that there are far too many people like this in the world. How can someone be so horribly nasty like that for no reason?![]()
So I just needed to vent, and be reminded that there are still good people in the world ![]()
