I have a friend who like a year ago took a self improvement lecture that seems to have made a big impact on her life. From what she tells me, it sounds like a workshop where they teach you to identify your goals and what's stopping you from attaining them etc. Kinda like life coaching. The course costs 5 or 6 hundred dollars.
When she told me about this a year ago, I was supportive for her but I told her that I did NOT have 500 extra dollars to spend. Sure, there are aspects in my life that I could improve (like my career) but for the most part I'm happy.
The problem is that everytime she calls me to 'catch up' she'll work the program into the conversation. for example, I'd complain about work and she'll jump on it and say 'that's why you need to come check this out etc!'
I promised her a month ago I'd go and 'check it out' since they were having a free intro class. Mainly I said yes to get her off my back and so she could feel that I support her.
Today she sends me a reminder email (the intro is 2 and half hours! ) and says 'there will be an opportunity to register after the intro!
I hope she does not think I am going there tommorow and dropping half a grand when I have a house to renovate and a wedding to plan. To be honest,, I am dreading a 2 and half hour class after a long a$$ day at work on top of which I have an hour long commute afterwards .
What do I do? I've canceled before and I feel awful!! But she's starting to become like a telemarketer!!!

Re: I DON'T NEED LIFE COACHING!
in all honesty, that is very annoying for your friend to be pushing you into doing something you don't want to do, especially when $$ is concerned. If you really don't want to go to the class, then don't go. Plain and simple. Don't go just to get her off your back. Tell her straight you don't want to go because it doesn't interest me, especially since it costs such a great deal of $$ that you can't afford to spend right now.
This thing sounds like a cult the way you are describing it and it seems like it's ****** your friend in big time! I couldn't deal with it if a friend of mine was in a similar situation and she constantly brought up the subject in random conversations.

Re: I DON'T NEED LIFE COACHING!
I would be honest with her. Tell her that you are so happy that she got out of it what she needed for her life, but for YOUR life this is not what you need right now. With everything you have on your plate tell her that you sometimes are looking for an ear and a friend, not a sales pitch. I wouldn't even go to the appt, it seems like false hope for her. If she got so much out of it and maybe has some info on it, couldn't she coach you herself if you wanted?
Sorry you are dealing with it.

Re: I DON'T NEED LIFE COACHING!
it great she found something that she thinks works, .
tell her that your happy for her, but it's just not something you think is for you, and for the amount that it cost, not something your willing to try right now ( or ever)
good luck

It totally sounds like a cult the way she's going on and on!!!
Is this someone you enjoy spending time with other than her attachment to trying to get you to spend a lot of money on this class? If not, you might want to cut your losses.
If so, maybe go for the first 1/2 hour or something then leave. Tell her you have a migraine and no miracle healer is going to help.

i agree. it's great that she's found something that works for her, but it's not something that everyone will enjoy as much as she does, and she really needs to understand that.
i'd tell her nicely, that even though you love the fact that it's helped turn her around and made her happier, you just dont feel the same way about the program.
if she's a good friend, she should understand and stop pushing you to do something you're really resistant to.

Tell her you need to wait till after your wedding , you dont have the money to do it right now if you decided you wanted to so you would rather got to the seminar when you have a clear had and can actually do it

Re: I DON'T NEED LIFE COACHING!
Thanks girls, all great advice!
She is a friend who was really fun before this whole thing! It makes me uncomfortable to even call her out because I don't want her trying to recruit all my friends over dinner!
The thing is, she got into it via another guy we both know whose MOM took the course. This guy also called me after he took the course too! But I only had to tell him 'no' once...
I just did a bunch of research on it and there is a debate whether it is a cult or even a ponzi money making scheme. My friend doesn't get any money by bringing people in btw. Just...her eagerness is offputting
I think I will talk to her tonight and let her know that I won't be paying money for this. Ever.
My stomach hurts. I hate confrontations!

Re: I DON'T NEED LIFE COACHING!
i agree with the rest of the girls...
just be honest! tell her you agreed to go because you want to support her, but its really not the right time for you...tell her you didnt want to hurt her feelings...but you are overwhelmed with work, house and wedding stuff
if shes a true friend, she will understand!
be completely honest....you can never go wrong with honesty!

ugh I;d just come out and admit I wasn't interested. Use the excuse you have too much planning to do, and your $ is going towards the wedding. maybe she gets a commission or something.

It's at the point where there's 'no excuse' for not checking out a free intro...I've used all of them! You girls are right, I'm going to be honest and if she still pushes me, I'm going to snap and bite her head off!
And she DOESN'T get commission! All participants are just encouraged to bring their friends and family It seems like alot of brainwashing in my opinion.
