i don't want to go with FMIL - help

FMIL wants me to go dress shopping with her but I don't want to. She has made this experience miserable and I now want to spend as little time with her as possible. (All I hear in my head is her saying 'i'm sick of robyn getting whatever she wants' with regard to my shower.)

So how do i get out of dress shopping with her? PLEASE HELP!!!

Maybe tell her you'd rather go with (fill in the blank) your mother, aunt, cousin, MOH, anything and that you want it to be just you two. Suggest that she come to a fitting later on down the road. Good Luck!

Oops - I didn't clarify. I meant that FMIL wants me to go dress shopping for HER. How in the world do i get out of that?

she's paranoid - if you look at her the wrong way she gets upset.

If you have somebody else to go with, say that you promised them earlier that you would go just with them as a special bonding thing.

If you don't have somebody else to go with, say that you appreciate her interest, but you really want to go alone to scout things out and get an idea of what you want so you don't needlessly drag other people around with you and waste their time, and that when you get a better idea of what you want then she's welcome to see what you've chosen.

oh, oops!

Maybe that you simply don't have enough time with all the planning and work and everything else? Or that you don't want her to feel as if you're being too picky about what she wears, so you'd rather she goes alone to avoid stepping on any toes?

If it were me I'd go with her though - I just don't trust my FMIL to pick out a decent dress, she has horrible taste in clothing!

I can't offer any suggestions as to how to avoid helping her pick out a dress for herself.

But, since she is asking you to go with her, maybe this is her way of extending the olive branch to you and acknowledging that she hasn't exactly been pleasant during the whole planning process.

This woman, as much as she is annoying you now, will be a part of your life forever. Do you really want to add to the tension by trying to get out of shopping with her??

Robyn, my sympathies. I had two agonizing days of dress shopping with MIL, who changes her mind like it's her JOB.

That said, you're stuck. Sorry. It's only temporary, and this way she can't hold it over your head. Who knows, maybe she'll fall in love with the first dress she sees?

Always have a plan B - So - Tell her - ok, I can squeeze in some time between 1-2:30, and then I have to leave to do _____. That way, you limit the time of the whole experience, get her moving along, and you have a reason to leave in the middle in case she hasn't made up her mind - you can say - oh, I have to leave - but if she has 2 dresses - tell her - call me later and let me know which one you chose - they both look lovely on you...

good luck!
