Sooo it never fails that whenever I go to the dentist I have to have some terrible procedure done. The last time I went was 5 years ago and I had my wisdom teeth out...it was a hellish experience.
So I went at the beginning of this month because the gum by one of my lower front teeth was recessing a lot...the dentist said it wasn't a huge deal but i did need it taken care of and referred me to a periodontist. I went there today...he agreed that it wasn't a big deal, but in order to fix it he has to take a piece of gum from the upper roof of my mouth and then cut into the gum in front of my teeth and stick it in there...all under local anethetic.
I am sick to my stomach over this and I feel like I'm going to cry...he said I won't feel anything but I feel like novicane never works the way its supposed to and I'm definitely going to feel it...the procedure is an hour long, I'm so worried I'll pass out or something. When he's done I have to be on a soft diet for a week.
Please send prayers my way...I really hope it doesn't hurt too much!!

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this procedure! But I'm sure you will be fine. My brother says the same thing about novicane..he says that it never works for him and that he always feels whatever they're doing. Tell them your concerns and maybe they will increase the amount of novicane.

Hey! I actually know someone who had this done to her entire mouth--though her actual teeth are in great shape, they said she would have dentures by the time she was 30 if she didn't have the procedure...that's how much her gums receeded. The end result is really great though. She said that she didn't feel a thing the first couple of days but that she had to stay in bed for a few days afterwards because all of the pressure on the roof of her mouth. If you are only having one tooth done though, it sounds like you should be fine :)

Are you sure it is necessary for this to be done? I have had the same problem with one of my teeth since I was in my early 20's and I was told of this procedure to correct it, but it was never presented to me as a necessity. If you are starting to have receeding of the gums, usually a periodontist will just start with scaling, which you have to do like every three months.
If you do def need the procedure, make sure to tell them of your difficulty of novacaine and make sure they give you an adequate amout. I am sure you will be ok, but I am sure it wont be pleasant.

Unfortunately he told me that if I did not do this soon there was a really good chance that I could lose the tooth...it is really recessed. He said it happened just because that's how I'm made.
My mouth is made really terribly, it always gives me problems.

Barb you are the best I made the appointment on one of the Fridays that FH has off, so that he can be there with me while I whine like a baby and blubber all over myself and then he can put me in bed and take good care of me haha.

aww good luck! i found out i might need root canal so i feel ur pain! dentists are no fun. im making FH come with me also. I'm sure you'll be fine, its just nerves. just think about ur wedding and try to ignore the hand in ur mouth haha.

I just had a tooth pulled on Tuesday and the trick with the novicane is to let it sit for at least 15 minutes after the injection, then get another one next to the bad tooth...it works!
