I have a new puppy and so much to learn...

If you responded to my other post when I wasn't sure about taking him, I want to thank you. Your encouragement helped me decide it was the right thing to do.
We brought him home last night and his papers show him to be well-bred with all his shots, and just under 4 months old. He's a Maltese and very, very active. I try to keep him in his own bathroom and the joining spare bedroom, but he follows me everywhere.

I would love advice on two areas. I want to house train him and not have him walk outside at all. Please let me know if you have any advice or experience in this area.
Also, I've always been afraid of dogs but since this is one breed I've always considered beautiful, I decided this would work. He likes to lick my hands and feet constantly. That's ok I guess, but he also bites. It scares me and I just want to drop him. I know he's a puppy and probably teetheing, but it's hard for me right now. I will buy him more toys today. How else can I break him of this before it becomes a habit.

Thanks so much.

Thanks again everyone.

Congratulations!
I would say he is definately teething., and he will probably do so for a few months. Most dogs will lick your skin, b/c they like the slt, and also it is a way of showing 'ownership.' If you want to make sure he doesn't teeth on your skin, what you can do is this: ( I hope this is described well.)
- when he opens his mouth to bite, place your thumb in his mouth and press down in the center of his tongue firmly, but not too hard. You will know when you are doing it right b/c the pup will try to release. If he cries you are doing it too hard. I don't know why, but they seem to hate a loss of mobility in their tongue.
-When you buy the tething toys, speak with someone in the store to make sure you are getting a toy that is good for your breed. Also, while they are teething smaller dogs are prone to rip through plush toys, so be aware of any rattles, squeaks & such that they might get to.

As far as training in the house, I don't know. I always paper trained them in the house, but then lead them outside as I described in my other post. I would ask the vet if this is something that you should do. I know there are some smaller dogs that you can train to use a 'litter box' but I do not know if a Maltese is one of them.

If there are any serious questions, ask the vet....BTW... Who is your vet? Do you have one yet?

I don't have a vet yet. The pet store he was purchased from recommended Hollis Court Animal Hospital in Bayside and included a free visit. I'm thinking I'll go there at least the one time and see how I feel about it.
Do you have one you are happy with? I live in Manhasset.

I know my questions are very serious and will definitely make the world of difference if not handled correctly. I was very impressed with a gentleman I spoke with at a pet store on Jericho in New Hyde Park. I can't recall the name but it was just west of New Hyde Park Rd. I'm going there in a little while and taking Frisky with me. I am seriously considering the wee-wee pad system and I need toys and a carrier of some sort. Although everything I've read so far recommends the metal crates, all my friends and relatives so far are against them.
I want to get to know the puppy better and then I'll bombard the vet and even the breeder with my questions.

Thanks for your response Hearzbellz.

Anytime. As far as the crate goes... I used a metal crate for all of my dogs during their training. You just need to make sure the one you get is the right one for the size for little 'Frisky' (cute name!!!) My uncle has a Maltese & his GF carries it in a Coach Doggie carrier as well. There are quite a few brands that have good quality carriers. I love my 2 vets, but they are all the way in Bethpage and Massapequa.

I can ask DH to ask around where he works in Roslyn if you like, but I would definately try out the one in Bayside as well.

Good luck with the new addition to your family

I have a 12 year old Maltese since she was three months old. I wanted to tell you they are the best little friends you could ask for. I taught her to go outside so I cant help you on the inside house training. I do use those wee wee pads when we are out though. THey work pretty well. Don't worry about the biting. She did that a lot when she was little and they never hurt you. They are the most precious angels! Enjoy!!!!
