I think I just came to the complete realization that teaching just isn't for me! I was an english major in college and I took a teachers prep program to get certified to teach ELA 7-12...i've been in schools for the past 3 years observing, student teaching, and subbing...my mother is a teacher and i've been exposed to that life since I was little...and all the while I kept having this nagging doubt that maybe i'm not cut out to be a teacher...I have the abilities to be the teacher, I'm good at lesson planning and maintaining peace in the classroom but I don't think I have the drive or the personality for it....I am not mentally or emotionally strong enough to be a teacher...and after 3 years, I've just come to the realization...NYC teachers, I don't know how you do it under these circumstances, but you guys are the BEST and I want you all to know that!
I actually feel relieved, but it's like a whole new beginning! Where do I start? I'm going to a job fair next friday, hopefully that does something but in the meantime, can you ladies give me some suggestions about what I should do or what kind of jobs I might qualify for? TIA!

awww I was touched by your post-- we usually feel like people can never understand or just don't care. It is one of the toughest jobs in the world --- you're right, it's not for everyone.
I think you are going to be so much happier in another field. Good luck and thank you for the lovely words of support -- we really need them.
hugs to you!

I know! I've only gotten a small feel of what you teachers deal with on a daily basis! Whenever someone asks me what my career is and I say I want to teach, they have this look on their face like 'that's it?' someone even had the nerve to tell me to do something more important! What is more important than educating the future generation?? You guys get no respect and I have no idea why....it's truly sad...hopefully things will change for the better...

Re: I have a newfound respect for NYC teachers
I taught in the City for six years and watched many, many people come and go. Unlike you, they didn't realize that teaching wasn't for them until it was too late, and they were miserable.
I actually think it's very brave for you to start on something new, rather than stay on your intended path because it's easier than facing the unknown. It'll be scary, but worth it in the end and I think you'll be happier. Good luck!!

I've seen that look, too... I'm a first grade teacher and I teach children how to read and write -- what's more amazing than that?

Re: I have a newfound respect for NYC teachers
first off thanks!!! Im in a good school with good kids and most of my parents are great. There are many things about NYC public schools in general that I hate and about administration NYC or LI that is so messed up - but Ive come to the conclusion that no matter where you work there will by BS and @ssholes!
Now I also want to say... are you sure? I was a TA and a sub for a few years and I really started to feel as you do, but once I got my own class and after a few months I was so happy I stuck it out! I love being a teacher now, but if you would have asked me that a few years ago before getting my class I would have said I dont really know.
that being said, Im sorry that you found that its not for you but its wonderful that you realized it now and you are still so young you can do anything with your life - just keep looking till you find something you love. BEST OF LUCK GINA! You will find something you love to do! i know it!

Thank you so much....You make a lot of sense and I really appreciate your honesty...Honestly, I don't know! It could definitely be the same situation that you went through...but at this point in time, i'm thinking maybe the best thing to do would be to explore other career options for the next few years and then i'm guessing i'll be able to make a better informed decision based on both experiences....so this definitely isn't a hard and fast decision...I guess you could call it exploring my options?

Re: I have a newfound respect for NYC teachers
Teachers do not have it as easy as everyone thinks. It's an exhausting job! It takes a certai type of individual to do it. Sometimes I think I might go into it and other times I'm happy going to my 9-5pm job.
I'm glad you realized it wasn't for you...it's the worst thing to work in something that you have no passion or excitment for. Good luck in disovering your new field...take your time. Maybe you can temp for a while and kind of 'date' differnt industries.
Good Luck!!!

Re: I have a newfound respect for NYC teachers
I'm sorry that you're not happy, but it is great that you figured it out so soon. With your background in English, did you ever think of getting your Masters in Library Science? You could work at a law firm with that degree and do book keeping. One of my MOH is going that route and she's very excited.
