I have a question about Guidance Counselors in DOE (M)
A friend of mine has a MSW and would like to become a guidance counselor in a public school. What would she need to do? This year she is teaching in a Catholic school just to get her feet wet. In the past, she was a Social Worker in Ohio.
Where should I point her?
Thanks

Re: I have a question about Guidance Counselors in DOE (M)
I have my MSW and I am a social worker in an elementary school.
Guidance and social workers are two different degrees and job titles, I am not qualified to be a school guidance counselor.
Your friend has to contact the New York State Department of Education, take Child Abuse Identification course and school violence. (both 2 or 3 hour classes.)
Of course, pay a fee and you get a provisional school certificate just like the teachers do.

There are a bunch of schools in this area that have Master's in School Counseling Programs. Your friend is more than likely going to have to complete a program or possibly a Professional Degree Program (which is less credit than the Master's and for people who have a degree in a related field).
Is your friend planning on looking for a job in this area? Is she bilingual? I will tell you that it is a horrible field to get a job in. I have been looking for a perm job for two years. I had a leave last year and am waiting to hear back from a school district now. The problem with this area is since there are so many schools that have this Master's there are a ton of graduates looking for jobs. The supply is much more than the demand. There are quite a few ladies on this site that have the degree and have gone on to other careers because they could not get jobs.
