I have a Question about the Church..

Can anyone tell me what a deposition is?? If thats even what its called..

My FMIL left a message on my answering machine that my FH needs to talk to the Priest that he's known since he was 2 because he has to get a deposition?? What is that??
(i'm not sure if thats exactly what you call it, I couldnt make the exact word out)

Does anyone know?? Thanks!!!

Re: I have a Question about the Church..

Your FMIL probably said a dispensation. It's a release from the Church. Are you getting married in a church that's not your parish? Or his parish? I don't know all the reasons for a dispensation but that's usually the main one. It's just an OK to go somewhere else.

I'm not sure what word she said, she was in the middle of saying it and then she said.. just call me.. but it sounded like dispensation..

My FH is Catholic & I'm Jewish.. We are getting married at our hall. I am presently looking for a Priest & a Rabbi to perform our ceremony, so my FMIL said she would call the Priest that knows my FH since he was 2.. and this was the message I received today on the phone...

So, I'm sitting here at work wondering what a dispensation is..

It's permission from the Church for your FH to marry at the reception hall. Usually, the Church wants Cathoilcs to marry in-Church. It's different if the couple is Jewish and Catholic. If it's like a differnt denomination of Christianity and Catholicism, then they definitely want the Wedding to take place in a Church. I'm going through something like this right now. It can be a pain in the a$$..

Yes he's correct. I am Catholic but getting married in a Greek Orthodox Church. Technically, if I don't obtain a dispensation from the Catholic Church before I marry in the Greek church, the Catholic Church will not recognize my marriage.

Thank you! I REALLY appreciate your very kind sentiments. I know.. it's ' I love this woman and I wanna marry her.. can you guys give me a break? Please.'.. I don't think the wedding taking place outdoors will ruin God's day. Well.. I don't think it will...

Re: I have a Question about the Church..

Now don't get me wrong, I've been Catholic all my life, but goodness!!!!
they ask for so much stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to have all your sacraments (I am taking my conmmunion/confirmation classes right now
every saturday...kind of boring but it means alot to FH to get married in
the church, NICE WAY TO SPEND MY SAT MORNINGS HUH?)
then they won't let you throw rose petals, for the money we're paying to
get married in the church we should be able to but JMO
and now you have to go through this, well best of luck and I hope you
can get all this accomplished soon and that they don't give you so much
trouble. You too OctGroom

Yeah, I know.. the Church can be great at times and at other points it can just leave you schratching your head. (The thing about the roses is absolutely ridiculous. OMG)

I'm sure there's deep appreciation on your FH's part for all you're doing.. my FW too.... She's very flexible with all this... and it DOES mean a lot to a guy..

Re: I have a Question about the Church..

I am an attorney. A deposition is when an attorney examines someone with a Court reporter. I am not Catholic, but I don't see where that would come into play with a priest.
