For those of you that have families with divorce issues what does your child call the step parents- dO they call them Grandma and grandpa even though they technically arent.

Me and Dh were talking about this and are very confused becuase in his family his mom and dad are divorced, His mother has been remarried for 20 yrs and His dad is on his 3rd marriage- butttt his DAd's second marriage my dh was very close with his stepmother who is now technically his ex step mom but still a part of our lives.

HOw do you explain this confusion to a child?? and what names are appropriate for these step parents??

I'm afraid I can't offer advice in your husband's case, since I don't know how to address a step-parent whom is no longer a step-parent.

All I can tell you is that Paul calls my stepDad 'Grandpa' and always will.

My nieces are in that situation...

They have a grandma, and grandpa (married)
an Oompa (not married)... And a Grandma Gail (used to be married to Oompa) Oompa had a lady in his life and she was just known as her first name...

I dont know if that helps you at all.. But I hope so....

Let the child come up with something of their own.. By substituting Grandma Gail, that covered a lot of confusion, and the girls didnt start to wonder until they got older. My SIL just explained to them that Oompa and Grandma Gail still loved each other, but not as much as Mommy and Daddy love each other... something along those lines... Good Luck!

Yep I have step-parents, I am a step-parent, we have so many 'extra' grandparents.
Our kids call them Grandma Karen, Grandma Marie, Grandma Cindy-our kids are older.
When my son was little he called my mom Gram & that stuck. I know lots of families that do Nanny & Poppy or Nana & Poppa & then still use grandma & grandpa for other people too. I think its a great question & it depends a lot on the people...all of the grandmas in my family are ok with their name being used-except my Grandma-everyone calls her 'little great-grandma'

ok oompa is the cutest thing i have ever heard.

my daughter is calling my husband's stepmom Mina - She just gave herself the name. My MIL's two ex husbands (besides my husband's father) who are still a part of our lives are going by their regular names so far.

HTH!

My MIL's and her husband are called Grandma and Grandpa.

My FIL is called Grandpa also, but his wife (who is 3 months younger then me ) calls herself by her first name! (Meanwhile, my sister has a similar problem -- her stepMIL is a couple of years older then my sister, but she wants to be called 'Grandma' )

I wanted my MIL and FIL to be called Nonna and Nonno, to distinguish the step-inlaws, but nobody listens to me.

My parents are Nanny and Papa.
