I have NO IDEA what to register for....FH thinks I am a dumb*ss
okay - so me and FH went to Fortunoffs last night, spent 3 hours there with the little gun and all we zapped was a frying pan and a wok.
I know they gave us a cheat sheet but I've heard some people say that some of their gifts that they registerd for are still in the boxes from like 2 years ago. I am a terrible cook so I don't do it often (I know I have to learn sometime) so I don't know which pot would be more useful than the other one. Plus, FH keeps picking these pots that can hold like 20 quarts! and I am like 'who the h*ll do you think I am cooking for?' Circulon or Analon or Caphalon...who? How do I know which one is better? We just kept staring at eachother like 'duh....do we need this?' I just started laughing but he was getting annoyed at me... he said I don't know anything... He is right.

LauraPete, Which Fortunoff did you go to. I was there last night to. You may have been the other frustrated couple we saw last night. we were in there for 4 hours. 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the evening and we decided on two things. Our casual dinnerware and an iron!

Well you need the essentials... Do you guys have a lot of this stuff already? If that's the case than it's a little harder but if not than you need just about everything! Look around your homes and you'll see
Everyday dishes Cookware flatware glasses towels luggage Iron blender toaster coffee pot
etc.....

Haa! You sound like us! I was unfortunately shopping in Jersey - my new home town so I guess I have to get used to it. I forget the name of the mall b/c there are SOOOOO many there! Where were you?

It can be overwelming. I made several trips focusing on different sections whether it be dinnerware, silverware, glasses, bedding, housewares and bathroom. Take your time and choose things you both want & need.

Sometimes the employees are very knowledgeable. If you ask them they may be able to tell you the difference between different products. Also, now that you have a registry there, go to the website. You can add things that way too. That''s what I did.

Old Country Road. I thought that we would be able to complete everything yesterday. But I realize that is not going to work for us.

Re: I have NO IDEA what to register for....
Dont feel bad i am cluless too. i have heard mixed things.
My friend said register foir EVERYTHING because its the only time you will have where people will be buying stuff for you and eventually yuo will use the stuff. That is what she did, within reason of course.
My opinion is, for me anyway, is that I am having a somewhat small wedding and am probobly going to register for cookware, silverware, plates, glasses, and some appliances. No kitchen or bath towels b/c i am not sure of the colors of the rooms and we have no idea where we are going to live. i can always buy that stuff myself. My thinking is this.. since i am having a small wedding i probobly wont get EVERYTHIng off the register so i am just registering fo the things I really want and hope I get them. Good Luck!!

Yeah, that is a great idea. We have the same dilema - we are going to be moving to a house probably in like 2 years so we don't know what any of the rooms will look like. Even the kitchen we are having problems with b/c we can't decide on color of the appliances - black, white, chrome...whatever. Well, I am glad to hear I am not alone b/c I felt really stupid. Especially when it came to the cooking stuff. I think I need to bring my girlfriend that's already married - maybe she can shed some light. Then we also keep questioning, do we really want fine china - are we ever going to use it? Should we just get really nice everyday plates that can pass for the good stuff when we have company? Is anyone doing that?

Laura - i know lots of people that did that. The only reason I didn't want to is because this is my chance to get my china. I don't picture myself buying 12 place settings of fine china in the future. Plus, a lot of people like to give that as a gift. I actually got 3 place settings for my engagement party alone!

Why don't you try registering in a store that you love - it doesn't have to be a dept. store. Try Crate and Barrell, Pottery Barn, ect. Atleast this way you could register for things you actually want instead of things you 'should' register for. Good Luck!

Actually, my FH suggested William Sonoma but I thought that place might be too expensive. Also, how is Macy's these days? I registered at Fortunoffs b/c i thought it was the thing to do but I just went to Macy's the other day and they have a pretty big selection!

Re: I have NO IDEA what to register for....FH thinks I am a dumb*ss
I had problems when I bought gifts off of Macy's registries. They don't have a lot of the items in stock, so they have to be shipped. If that isn't bad enough, shipping costs extra! I had another friend who registered at Macy's at Roosevelt Field and when I went to get her gift at Macy's at Sunrise Mall, they didn't have any of the same items.
I did Fortunoff and Willaims-Sonoma. They are a little pricy at Williams-Sonoma, but they have really cute things.

I found it easier to look online and get an idea what I really liked (whether I needed it or not). So when you get to the store you already have an idea of what to look at. It's very overwhelming, so at least this way you can concentrate on a few items at a time. Once you got the basics down, you'll start zapping everything in site. Good Luck.

Hi Girlie-
Here's my 2 cents...don't feel like you have to only register in one place. Its better to give guests a choice anyways. If you are going to do fine china and barware and crystal, Fortunoff would be a great place to do it. Also pots and knives and the like since you say you aren't really into cooking. Williams Sonoma is GREAT for gadgets (cheese graters, can openers, strainers etc) and anything else cookware related. And finally, hit Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrell b/c you might find everyday dishes and more casual things (like a popcorn popper, grill utensils, funky potholders etc) that is more suited to your lifestyle and tastes.
By the way, Steve had absolutely NO desire to pick out china and flatware so I just went with my mom to do it. And truthfully, I've added things like towels, tablecloths etc without his 'approval' that he will never care about anyways. Made it easier this way.
P.S. we wound up registering at Fortunoff, C&B, Williams Sonoma AND Bloomingdales. And my crazy FMIL has the nerve to say I don't have enough on them!!!

Registering wasn't easy for us either! We have lived together for almost 7 years & I manage a retail store, so we basically have everything & then some. In the end, we registered for china & crystal at Fortunoffs(originally I wanted to do Macy's, but Fortunoffs had better prices) & then we registered at Target for somethings we wanted.

I registered at Williams Sonoma (and Fortunoffs) and I got everything off my registry for my e-party and bridal shower. There are expensive for pots and pans and kitchen electronics but for everyday stuff (plates, gagets, ect.), they aren't too far off from any other store.

if you register at macys you should get a set of their 'tools of the trade' pots/pans, they run about $50. my sister loves them over her calaphan
