So, I told my mother my FI and I really want to do floating candle centerpeices, instead of flowers, because I think it's nicer for a fall wedding (ours will be on halloween), and because I'm not a big fan of flowers. She told me I can't possibly do candles, that no one does candles, that we have to do flowers, that candles are a fire hazard, that the centerpeices won't give the table enough color, blah blah blah, and instead suggested we carve pumpkins and put flowers in the pumpkins.... now, tell me, who the hell will have time to carve 12-15 pumpkins the day before the wedding? And, why in the world would I want ORANGE as my color theme???? How do you rationalize with a very conservative, traditional nudnick mother??
UMMM Fire hazard yes but..... What a bout the tall flower centerpieces with the tappered candles on them. If that touches a flower its up in smoke. Its ure day and tell her thats what u want. And A LOT OF PEOPLE DO CANDLES!!!!!

I'm a Halloween Bride too and we're doing autumn colors...reds, yellows, oranges, etc.... Our first idea for centerpieces was to have small carved out pumpkins with flowers in them. Another bride on here had them and they looked beautiful. We wouldn't dream of doing the pumpkins ourselves so we will be asking our florist about them. It doesn't mean that Orange is your color, just part of the scheme. I do like your floating candle centerpiece alot though, I've seen a pic of it. Bottom line as many brides will tell you, it's YOUR wedding, so whatever centerpieces YOU want you should have!

Umm that looks pretty.. I dont get it.. its FLOATING candles right.. so they're in WATER right? Fire Hazard? I'd be more concerned about those tall centerpieces I see than floating candles..
Other than that. I think your choice adds a nice bold color. But mothers can be werid. Which is why Im just doing it without asking for opinions and if people offer them I just say 'oh wow, you're right, I see your point, thanks' and go do what I want.
Then again I am paying for it myself. *shrug*

Weddings make people crackheads. Just be firm about it - she'll accept it. My grandmother was like - No Satin - you can't have satin in the summer, people will talk about your mother! (because she's making my dress) Guess what - I got a satin dress.

Or maybe I'll just go buy my damn floating candle centerpeices and set it up the day of the wedding myself... not much she can do about that! ha ha ha ha... I finally agreed to wear her wedding dress (with some major restyling), so you would think that would make her sufficiently satisfied and let me decide on everything else!

I think that is a truly awesome centerpiece....it's YOUR wedding and I've told my parents numerous times that what they thought a wedding was is null and void...it's MY wedding and I'll do what I want

Have her talk about it to a florist - they do those things all the time.
BTW, we're having similar centerpieces, and we're buying the materials ourselves - MUCH cheaper.

How about..
having florist carving out pumpkins so that some can be used as a 'vase' for flowers (mums would look lovely) and some can be carved out to be more like bowls for floating candles. Some tables can have candles and some can have flowers

The pumpkins with mums actually look very nice and are very inexpensive. I'll try to find a pic.

Hmm...she's paying. Why don't you offer to pay for the centerpieces, since the candles won't be very expensive? That way she can't complain that she paid for something she didn'g like.
Or, explain that you will have floating candles in the center, and then you will have flowers around the base?
