That I'm only able to take 12 weeks FMLA, after the baby is born.
I'm so upset. I really wanted to spend the first 6 months home with my little guy. I can't imagine leaving him at only 12 weeks. We'll see what happens, but right now I'm pretty sad just thinking about leaving him at home, while I work. Did anyone else feel this way? Am I over reacting? Are my prego horomones getting the best of me?

Is there no way you could stay home? My boss ended up letting me stay home for 6 months.
Of course it is without pay but, it is so worth it to me

I completely sympathize. I am lucky in that I am a student and able to take a leave of absence for a year. Regardless, I stay awake at night upset and stressed about going back to work. It is my main worry - and it isn't even for a year! You are totally normal to be sad about this - I hope you are able to work out some solution that makes you feel better.

I can completely understand! I hate that the US thinks that a whole 12 weeks is suffice in raising a newborn. I really don't know how I am going to deal with leaving my baby that young. I wouldn't even be going back to work if it weren't for the expense of healthcare now-a-days. I am going to try to work 30 hours ( my company still does benefits) and work second shift so that we don't need to use daycare. Hopefully, it will be temporary until my husband's business gets set-up and going.

I have about 8 weeks tops, if that makes you feel any better. Does anyone know how much disability pays if you have to stay out of work for a whle? thanks!

I only get 12 weeks too - what's even more amazing about the FMLA act is that it was only created 10 years ago!! That's it! Can you imagine how bad it was for women even before this law?
I agree that it's still not nearly enough time to be home though.

Re: i just found out
The sad thing is that NYS only pays diablility for 6 weeks after childbirth. Yiou have to see how much your company pays.. I actually am getting my FMLA now since I am out of work because of HBP . So basically when the end of MArch comes we are on one income....The only plus side of all this is that now I do not have to worry about going back to work after the 12 weeks..
But chekc to see maybe they have some extra time like maternity time off.. or if you can use vacation/sickl time

Yes, my Co has supplemental pay in those 6 weeks so in my case I'll get full pay, but the remaining 6 weeks will be unpaid

I work for the CIty of New york so i can take 2 years off and still have my job back but of course it is all without pay so what's the benefit?
Looks like we are all in the same boast. I am on bed rest now and have been for 4 weeks so my pay stops in the next 4 weeks and then it is 12 week maternity leave without pay!!!

I have a question when is a good time to approach HR to discuss your maternity leave and/or the policy?
I think I get 6 weeks too b/c I've been at my job less than a year. But I'm planning to take the 3 months unpaid b/c I really want to be with my baby as long as I can.

Re: i just found out
It turns out that I can use 2 weeks vacation at fullpay, 2 weeks sick time full-pay, 6 weeks disabiltiy @ $216 a week . Then I can take 12 weeks unpaid FMLA and still have my position. So that's a little better, but not ideal. I really wished I could of taken at least 6 mths, but I would lose my position b\c I haven't at my current position for over a year!

I'm notifying them at 7 months. The time off you are allowed depends if your company is required to follow the FMLA law....if so, then you'd get 12 wks but only 6 are defined as disabled by the state. The remaining 6 are Family Leave.
