So, I moved back to LI a couple of weeks ago and I have been looking for a teaching job. I'm pretty confident that I will get one by the fall, but now I have been thinking that maybe I will go back to school for my masters full time in the fall instead. The only problem, obviously, is money. I still have rent to pay in MA until December, and I would of course need a job to have money (duh). But FH suggested just taking out 3K over on my student loan and pay off the rest of the year's rent and not worry about it, go back to school and get it done and over with in a year...rather than getting a job full time. Neither idea seems like a bad one, but does anyone have any advice on what I should do? I hate making big decisions like this.

Re: I just need a sounding board....
Do you have to do an internship for your masters? If so I would suggest doing it before you get a job. I started my masters program and I probably wont be able to finish because I have 2 internships to do and I'm not willing to quit my job in order to do them. Look into what's involved to get your degree and figure out if you can do it at night or if it would require day time work as well.
first: WHY ARE YOU PAYING RENT UNTIL DEC???? you can break a lease...I could see losing your security but thats it...and I know at least in NY, its illegal to charge 2 rents for one apt...so they can't rent out that apt if you are paying rent...
second: I would actively look for a job (unfortunately LI took a big hit from Pataki in budget...and art and music are one of the first to go - my sisters head has been on the chopping block for 3 years...she is lucky...shes still the very last person for seniority...but many have lost their job under her)
if you cannot find a job, make sure all your paperwork is set to go for your masters...do register for more than you would take if you were working full time...but if you don't get a job...take a few more classes...
you can take out more $ on a loan for living expenses..
good luck

Re: I just need a sounding board....
I am very aware of the situation with budgets on LI(everyone in my family is a teacher), but I am looking mostly in private schools(not that it is any better). I could deal with the low salary because I teach privately at night during the year and can make up the difference. I don't know, I guess I will just continue to look for a job and take it if I get one. If not, I'll go back to school. Thanks girls
