I just tried to adopt a cat and...

All FH wanted for xmas was a kitten. I found an adorable one on petfinder and emailed the shelter (listed as Long Island) to ask about adopting it. They emailed back to say that it would cost $250 to adopt it because they post animals at kill shelters all over the country, and then have to pay to transport it to Long Island, or I could go to Tennessee to pick it up! So I emailed back thank you, but that is a bit pricey and we may just go to North Shore Animal League. They sent me a very rude email back saying it I don't want to pay the money I clearly shouldn't be making the commitment to have a kitten as they cost a great deal of money for food, check ups, litter, etc. All I wanted to do was adopt a kitten and now they go and make me feel so guilty about it.

they're being nasty. you have every right to save yourself the $. just because it's going to cost you a lot of money to raise the kittne through life doens't mean you should have to pay $250 now or that refusing to do so makes you a bad person who is incapable fo taking care of the animal. Ignore them. they suck

Sorry you had to go through that. It's always pricy adopting a kitty, more than you'd think. I am sure they get a lot of people who think they can just 'pick up' a kitten. They shouldnt have assumed you didnt want the kitty because of the money though. Shame. But Im sure they get frustrated.

Go to Hempstead animal shelter or Bide a wee in Wantagh!! North Shore is tough because they do background checks and will want to talk to your husband to ok it!! We got our baby at Hempstead animal shelter for $75 and that included vaccinations when she is old enough and spaying when she is old enough too!! They have tons of adorable little kitties. Our baby was only 4 weeks old when we adopted her!! Good Luck!!

And that was totally wrong of them to email you that. Kittens are not THAT expensive!!

I say write them back and say thank you very much but I would like to save another kitten from a kill shelter where it is cheaper...the money I save there will go towards getting the kitten lots of toys and food and spoiling him! Now have a good day you snotty people who don't have any holiday spirit!

I would email them back and tell them to go F themselves. Who do they think they are to make any assumptions about you?! adopting and animal does cost money, but $250 is a bit much. If that's what it cost anywhere, then fine, but you know perfectly well that you can adopt a kitty for much less.

Not sure where you are but we got Larry David at the NYCACC in Brooklyn and he was $80 to adopt (total). I'm positive the cats were a little cheaper, maybe $50?

Screw those people, what the hell happened to southern hospitality??

That's rude. It sounds like you have a good heart and they are the ones trying to MAKE a buck.

Does your family have a vet you use? Ask the vet if he/she knows of any kittens in need of homes. That's how we got ours.

I agree! Also, I was at the Town of Hempstead shelter ( I think-- in Wantagh) recently and they had plenty of kittens and they've waived all their fees through January 7th for the holidays. Good luck!

Exactly! I have the money, but know that I can save a kitten around here where it will be cheaper without the transportation fees. Honestly I would rather pay $75 to adopt a kitty and donate the other $125 to shelters around here. The problem was I really wanted an orange tabby because that was what my first cat was who I loved more than anything, and there aren't too many orange kittens around at Christmas time. We may wait til spring. Still the people made me feel bad around Christmas and that just isn't right.

Email the shelter back and ask why they're trying to turn a profit on a helpless kitten's life. Explain, in most states, that $250 is called a 'ransom', and then ask them how they sleep at night knowing that they wring the life from baby animals while soaking possible-owners out of 100s of dollars.

I took your advice and said F you @sshats I'm going to get me a monkey instead! Hopefully one of those little ones that opens jars because they are so cool. On an unrelated note, at our xmas party last week I asked a friend why she went b!tchcakes about her shoes hurting and then wanted to dance. Finding more and more ways to use cakes...

P.S. Try Bide-a-wee, or the Humane Society or North Shore Animal League for a kitten. If it's a suprise to DH then maybe avoid North Shore (someone upthread mentioned they do background checks which are good for the animal, but bad for a surpise!)

You probably were dealing with Kitty Res-Q. They rescue cats and kittens from down south.

I used to volunteer in a cat shelter in Queens, but got sick and had to stop, They were Animals can't talk. But there are other places.
Here are a few' Animal Haven in Flushing, Queens, NYCACC, and Hempstead animal shelter. Just remember, go asap because kitten season is just about over.

That's terrible!
Kittens are expensive....so wouldn't they want you to save some money upfront, so you can put it towards the kitten when you have her at home?

We adopted a kitten from a shelter in Glen Cove in November and it was $75....she is a perfect kitten and they have a lot there.

i second bide a wee they are really nice there
also check the animal emergency centers - i got 2 of my cats there - their owners abandoned them when they were hurt - they hospital treated them for free and then i adopted them - total cost $0.00
