service tax is so they can charge you more money and as far as cash, I would say depends on the vendor

Depending on the vendor they will charge the service tax, even if you pay in cash, but there are some that won't. Our RD venue is not charging us tax if we pay in cash...

Wow I'm not knocking anyone's business I just do not understand why the service is being taxed and I'm paying per plate, I'm giving the maitre'd $3-5 per plate and I'm giving the bridal attendent or whomever some more money....

That was one of the questions I had asked all the reception halls b/c FH and I plan to pay everything in cash...however, they all said even if we do pay cash, we have to pay all the service charges etc.

My vendors are also all saying this so far.... It stinks that you get one price you're happy with but then have to add tax and gratuity and more crap on top of that....

Some vendors like photographers wont charge it either b/c you pay cash or b/c they do their accounting differently. Some concider them selves offering a service rather than a product so it all depends how they do their accounting.

RHs charge it regardless of if you pay cash because they have to report it. I know the gratuity goes to the waitstaff salarys (like $8 - $10/hr), but the tax is just b/c they have to pay taxes so they have to collect it.

Yeah, I would think those that charge less than RHs -- photogs, bands, Djs, limos -- can get away with not reporting and therefore taking cash and not charging tax. But RHs do too much business and I would imagine have to charge it. I would think that it's a matter of 'can i get away with it?'

But I never thought of tax on the band and photog ... not sure why ... now I have to reconsider how much I am willing to pay!!!

Re: I know it's been asked but

we asked of RH if we pay cash can we not pay tax and they said 'it is not how it used to be' because they have to report everything....
service charge which is a better name for gratuity should not be taxed
they should figure it out like this:
145pp x 18-22% gratuity=
145pp x 8.325% tax=
and then add these two numbers and add it to the pp amount which will give you what you are paying per person...

alot of venues try to tax the gratuity which is just crazy...when you tip in a resturant they do not tax it and it is basically the same thing.....

photo..video...band/dj all should not be taxed but the photo can tax the albums because they are products...i know i am paying cash and these are not charging us tax they say it is 'in the price' if we give them cash....

i wish the RH would do the same...

It depends on the vendor. Some wont charge tax if you pay cash. Some will even lower their prices. If you have the cash it never hurts to ask!
