I live in FL (originally LI)..and we definitely have had our share of hurricanes. Just remember a few things: the news/weather channel seem to find it amusing to envoke mass hysteria unnecessarily. It's only going to be a category 1 or 2 storm by the time it gets to LI...and even though the houses on LI aren't made to withstand high winds, it will probably take alot more than that to cause significant damage. Just remember to stock up on water, non perishables (my usual is granola bars, chips) and take anything that is currently outdoors, indoors. And stay away from windows just in case.

I agree too! I felt better after reading this on ABC:

It is also worth noting that tropical weather models are notoriously some of the worst in terms of accuracy, which is one reason we need to look quite a few and then take a blend to get in the ballpark on what will actually happen 2 and especially 3 days down the road.

I'm not scared, but I don't want to lose power and be stuck in my apartment all by myself (or worse,w ith my disgusting bltch of a roommate... I don't know if she'll be here or not) so I think I'm gona stay at FH's house... still lives with IL's so I won't have to worry about food and radios and batteries and havign a phone... and we can all be together.

Yea the news doesn't help...but you also want to take it seriously (for example the christmas storm this year)

My friends shower is on sunday...and I hope it doesn't get cancelled or anything. I wonder if they will be given the option to reschedule if necessary.

I'm being prepared but I'm not going to get nervous about it, hopefully it's not so bad. FI and myself both have to work so we will take extra clothes and if we have to stay at work so be it. Does anyone remember hurricane Gloria? That was the worst we where without power about a week.

FH and I are bunking over at my Mom & Dads house...we went food shopping tonight and spent $300 for the six of us (my Bro and his GF will be there too!) We are totally ready for this...plenty of food, water, batteries even a propane camping stove lol!!! BRING IT ON Irene!!! I just hope my fish tank is ok at our apartment if we loose power!

This - I lived in FL for 25 years. Also - Don't be stupid and go drving around in it either. Be prepared for no power because trees will knock power lines over. I got hit by 3 hurricanes in 1 year - as long as you don't freak out, remain calm, and adpat to the situation you'll be fine
