What is the deal with Reception tipping? Why does it say it is including 18% gratuity in my bill, but then I am still expected to tip on top of that? I usually tip 20% and up for good service anyway, but every place I have gone to has told me that 'gratuity' on the bill, doesn't really mean gratuity, that it goes towards other costs.
Can anyone explain this to me? I feel lost!

That is odd. My contract has an 18% service charge and when I asked about tips I was told to figure 2.50pp for the Maitre'D and Captain. The service charge is for the 'Service' (waitress's).

ok- thanks for putting some light on this! I couldn't believe that this one vendor told me that either...

We used to have such heated tipping debates on these boards...lol

When I got married, the only people we tipped at our reception hall were the Maitre D $300 and $50 for the bridal attendant.

The gratuity fee basically goes to the BM and others. I did a calculation on how much I spent in gratuity compared to the number of staff working at my wedding. I know that my hall didn't give them that money- at least not very much of it.
