Is it ok to have one? Anyone else getting one but isn't Jewish?

I love the hora dance too!

I think you can do whatever your little heart desires

It's your day, if you want to dance the Hora, dance it like it's your job!

The significance of the chuppah is that it represents the home a man and woman create when they are married. It is open on all four sides to show their loved ones (wedding guests) that they are always welcome (Im pretty sure that if it isnt open, it isnt considered a chuppah rather a canopy) If you look at it that way, then I would definitely do it.

However, you should know that a chuppah is pretty much the only thing that makes a Jewish wedding Jewish. Stepping on a glass is a custom but it is not mandatory and neither are ketubahs.

WOW....that is one beautiful chuppah and one beautiful wedding!!!

I don't think this qualifies as a chuppah, but my cousin had this set-up at her wedding....neither her or her DH are Jewish

Quick question, I am getting married at Eastwind under a canopy, but my florist is going to decorate it with tulle and flowers. The canopy is open on all sides, but Is this really considered getting married under a Chuppah?

That's an archway, not a chuppah.

Do you see how it's closed on 2 sides? Plus not many people would fit under it. A chuppah traditionally is square or rectangular in shape and ahs 4 poles (although Leslies had no poles and was suspended from the ceiling and looked AWESOME) and has enough room for the bride and groom and rabbi and usually the parents at least under it. As leslie mentioned the chuppah symbolizes a home, and an archway like this one, doesn't seem to me to be the shapre to suggest a home, etc. Also I think technically it's supposed to be a non-permanent structure, but I'm not 100% on that.

Thanks. I asked about the poles once and I was told that it just needs to be a covering. They used poles because many weddings were traditionally held outside and nothing could hold the covering up. Here was mine:

I should also add that by having open sides (and in my case no poles) it allows for some awesome shots by your photographer. I loved this one of me walking around DH! The chuppah was above us!

We're not jewish but we had a chuppah/canopy at our wedding. I always thought the chuppah was gorgeous and did some research on the significance.

'Symbolic of the home that we will make together and by extension the love that fills it, the chuppah is open on all four sides so that friends and family will always know that they are welcome. The chuppah does not promise that love or hope will keep out misfortune. The flimsiness of the chuppah is a reminder that the only thing real about a home is the people in it who love one another and choose to be together as a family.'

Knowing what it stands for make me love it more. After discussing it with hubby and a few of our friends and family... we decided to use it, I hope we didn't offend anyone bc that's that last thing we want to happen.

Im not offended at all. You took the exact meaning of a chuppah and used it properly.

I also know many people who get lifted up on chairs at their weddings who arent Jewish. The significance being that the bride and the groom are to be treated as royalty on their wedding day sitting high above all others as they begin their lives together. How could that be bad - Jewish or not?

The concepts behind so many rituals and customs of marriage are beautiful.

Hahaha! Me too. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I even asked for pricing at my florist!

The faux mirzvah thing, IMO is stupid. it's taking a very important tradition and just making it a joke. Just have a big sweet 16 and call it a day. But assimilating symbols that are meaningful to you from other religions is awesome, IMO.
