I made the decision - I'm hypenating my name!

I made the decision - I'm hypenating my name!

I've been going back and forth on this for months now. I don't want to lose any part of my maiden name - not first, middle or last. And I didn't want to hypenate because it looks weird. And I didn't want to make my madien name my middle name because I would still, basically, be using my FI's name as my name, with just a little inital in the middle. But I want to share my future family's name as well, espeically since almost none of the mothers in my family share their children's last names.

Do I change my name and just use my maiden name professionally? Do I not change my name and use my FI's name socially? I've decided to hypenate and just do both - use my maiden name professionally and my FI's name with social/kid situations. This way we all have the same last name legally, but my last name initial is the same. I just told my FMIL, so now it's set.

YAY!!!!

That's exactly what I'm doing... congrats!

I think I am going to do that as well. I think maybe as time goes by, I might drop my maiden name, but I am not ready to give it up yet and I still want to be connected to FH by name. I haven't told FMIL yet, though. I think I will let FH do that. She speaks English but this may be a tricky thing to understand and better off explained in her native tongue.

I have separation anxiety (kidding) and I don't want to lose my last name!!! It's SO cool!

It's actually very customary in many cultures to hyphenate! I, on the other hand, am not going to hyphenate, but will keep my maiden name as my middle name, since I don't have one

I just got my marriage license..on Friday , and I asked the lady behind the counter so many questions about what I should do as far as 'last names' go. Well I changed mine to FH's name...hyphenating would be sort of comical, since I am jewish and he is Italian and it's obvious in the names lol The lady informed me, that a name becomes yours by 'use'...I will use my maiden name at work, (teacher) until, the new name starts to take hold...

I've been going through the same debate. I like my last name and I'm actually the last one since my dad (now deceased) was the only boy and I'm his only child. Primarily, though, it's a business decision. By the time I get married, I'll have been practicing law for 1 year and I don't want to lose any contacts I made in law school because they don't recognize my last name--they know me as JC, not JH. Since everyone keeps telling me how important 'networking' is, I feel like I'll be at a disadvantage if I completely get rid of my last name. So, I think I might either hyphenate or just use my maiden name professionally and my married name privately. The middle name idea is still on the table though :) Good thing I have til 2005!!

I have been giving this a lot of thought. I have decided to hyphenate my name professionally for now at least, and to use my FH's last name socially. I'm not quite ready to give up my last name!
