Is it tacky to have a ceremony at a chapel and not have any food or party afterwards?

Honestly? yes.
more so b/c i think people would expect it and would be totally confused as to what to do afterwards. i mean, even if you had a house party afterwards or something (depending on how many people) it would be fine... but to have Nothing at all would be weird to me. More so because, also, after people see you walk down the aisle... they want to celebrate with you, not jsut give you a kiss and hug and go home
there really are soooooooo many options- even for the strictest budget- we could still make this happen!!!!

I'd try to do something. if you rent out a room at a restaraunt for like A$25 a person, or have a brunch buffet, it can be inexpensive and still a celebration. I don't want to say it's tacky, I mean the ceremony is the important part, but I'd try to have SOMEthing afterward, even if it's just a brunch at your house, etc

If you have no money at all... then no, it's not tacky. If you want to celebrate your marriage with close family & friends, and they understand that it's just a ceremony, it's not wierd to me.

I agree..but you can take the close family to a nice lunch after for under $400 I'm sure. then have your big party when you can afford it.

It's not tacky, but people will be annoyed if you don't feed them.
29 years ago, my parents got married. Unfortunately a few days before the wedding my Dad's father died suddenly. Judaism dictates that you still have the happy occasion go on, but you have to scale back the party. My Mom and her parents wanted to postpone but Dad's family pushed for the traditional way.
So, my grandparents, being the lovely people they were, REALLY scaled back (more than they had to, probably out of spite knowing them). My cousins tell me that there was almost nothing to eat at the reception. They told me this recently. They *still* get annoyed when they talk about my parents' wedding. Of course they blame it on Mom's parents, but my Mom and Dad and I still get excluded from family events, and almost no one from that side came to our wedding.
Therefore, have a little something, just so that people don't drive all that way and go home hungry. You can put it together very inexpensively.

I agree. If you keep it to immediate family and friends, and advise them that it's the ceremony only and nothing else, then go right on with it. The important part of your wedding day is your wedding! Not whether you feed people or not! The people who love you and care about you won't care!

No, I don't think it's tacky. Again, people do what's best for them. If this is what I wanted, this is what I would do.

No it is not tacky. Everyone does what their means allows. If you would like to invite friends and family to your ceremony but not do anything afterwards that is fine. I think it is the most important part anyways. I know this will shock some, but I have been to ceremonies which even afterwards we have gone to a restaurant and paid for ourselves. I have been fine with that as well.
However, I am speaking from the perspective of someone not from LI, so others may have different expectations.
You could invite people back to your place or a families and have some food and drinks. You could do this at a very small cost.

I don't think that it is tacky if you are having a small ceremony. If you are planning on inviting a large amount of people to the ceremony, like 100 or something, then I might have something, even if it is a small reception, like everyone going back to your parents house for a continental breakfast. Better yet just serve coffee and wedding cake. If you have out of town guests coming in for the ceremony, I would give them something to eat. Just put on the invitation that it's a ceremony only, no reception. Or put cake and coffee will be served at such and such a place. As long as your quests know what to expect, they should be fine. Good luck, and do what works for you and makes you happy, don't worry about what others may think.

I think if you keep it small, it's not tacky. Just invite the closest people to you.

It is NOT tacky. The most important part of a marriage is the ceremony.

I agree...
Some people miss the whole point of a wedding, the ceremony is the MOST important part of the wedding. Not, how much you're spending on each plate, or who spending the most on their wedding.
It's not tacky, you do what you want it's your day and I'm sure it's going to beautiful no matter if you have a reception afterwards or not.
