As you all know, I have two puggles, both of which are a handful. Im having problems with them eating our furniture to the point that Im sick and tired of them. A lot of it is our fault because we let them have too much run of the house. So finally we decided that we were going to confine them to a smaller space - a space that really doesnt have much for them to ruin, except, of course, the moldings and walls, etc. So, i had my mom check on them today and Rocky jumped the gate. I knew that this would be a problem because he just hates to be confined.
So basically what I am getting at is that I would like to possibly buy a crate for Rocky and crate him all day long. I need to know if you guys think that 10 hours a day is way to long to leave a dog crated. Thats how long we are at work for. Any advice would be great!!!!

Re: I need advice about crating a dog
Gotta do what you gotta do. How old is your puppy? Is he house trained? Most dogs will not pee in their kennels, so you should be alright there. I read somewhere that dogs sleep 15 hours a day (aprox.). Does ten hours include night time...what do you do with him at night? While you are home you need to make your puppy tired. Play...a lot! Outside and inside...this way your puppy gets a little of both atmospheres. Im not really sure what a puggle is and if the must be inside...but heres a thought. If you have enough room in your yard put up a tall/large kennel outdoors. Also, put a large puppy house in there so he can get out of the rain and that. I would put food/water, toys and a blanket in there also. This may not work in the winter or someplace cold. Hope this helps.

Re: I need advice about crating a dog
I crate my Boston 3 days a week and she goes to doggie day care two days. On the crate days a neighbor's daughter walks her 2x a day (she's in 6th grade.) Actually her mom does at lunch and then the daughter after school, but in the summer it will just be the girl. Perhaps there are trustworthy neighbors where you are? It works for us. The pup seems happy.
Eventually I'd like to get a doggie door and let her roam the house but she's only 5 mos right now, just too young. I'm thinking after some obedience lessons, perhaps when she's a year old, we may try a little more space.
