I need advice opinions etc. JOB RELATED

I have a masters degree and certifications in my field. I took care of my dad who was sick for many years and never really got to be in my field of work. After he passed, I deceided now is the time to get a job in my field, then 9-11 happened. The job market has been awful and there are no job openings in my field or anything related to it that pays decent. I am working part time and feel like I am not doing anything I like. I was thinking of going to school to learn how to do nails. Does anyone do this for a living and if so do they enjoy it? I love people, and I am artistic and creative. Does it pay decent? I was thinking of starting in a shop and then working for myself out of the home eventually. The school also has job placement.
ETA- I have student loans to pay too.

I know you have not been happy at your current job so I think as long as financially you can do it & DH doesn't mind then you should go for it! If you don't like it can you change to something different & is there anything else that you would want to do?

I'd say if you want to do nails b/c you would like that, then go ahead, but if you really have your heart set on your field, then keep trying to break into it, use your school's career services office, alumni relations office, read journals for that field, etc. Don't give up on your Master's field if you really want to do it but haven't had an easy entry.

But if you aren't interested anymore, do nails if that's what you'd like to do!

I have an MPA in Health Administration and a certificate in Gerontology and Health care finance. I have been looking forever for a f/t job in that field- unless I want to work for 20,000 and be in a dead end job .... I have student loan bills to be paid too, that would not even give me $$ for anything.

I'm really surprised you're having a difficult time. FI and I work in healthcare and I always thought that was the one field that you could count on. Have you tried some of the major hospitals on LI?

To answer your question though, I think if you want to do nails go ahead but I don't think you should give up completely on healthcare admin. Good luck!

it has been awful they want to give me jobs that it was not even worth it to go to school for. I thought so too, they hire from within. I have sent resumes and they get stopped half was thru sending them etc.

I hate to say this, but sometimes you have to take one of those crap 20,000 to start.

You say places hire from within, you have to get your foot in the door somehow.

But, if what your reallt want to do is nails, then go for it. Especially if you have the time and $.

Ok, here is my opinion.....
I would take one of those 20,000 jobs. I really would. If for no other reason than to add to your resume. I think you owe it to yourself to pursue the career that you already invested so much time, effort , energy and money into. BUT, I think that you should ALSO do nails to make up the difference in pay.
When I taught in Massachusetts, I was making almost 55K a year in a school that I was miserable in. I decided to move back to NY because I hated it in MA and I could only find a teaching job that paid 27K. I am only certified in MA and not in NY and I don't want to work in public schools, so I had to take this low paying job in a private school, but it's building my resume until I figure out my next move. Ontop of that, I also teach private flute lessons. I make another 20K a year doing that alone! Does it suck to work six days a week and not get home until after 10 three nights a week? YES, but it's what I have to do for now and I am happy. Truely happy.
I just always look at the benefits down the road. Like when I was teaching in MA, I was miserable and hated the job, but when I came back to NY, EVERY job I interviewed for, I got. I had my pick, all because I stayed at that job in MA and gained experience in my field.
So that's my opinion. Sorry so long winded, but I think you should do both, take the low paying job in your field AND do nails to make up the difference.

Depending on what your field is in, you may want to just open up your own nail salon. I'm thinking that if you have some sort of business degree, you'll be able to handle running your own business.

You'd still need to get your license in nails. And, it would be great if you have the ability to run your business as well as 'do the work'.

edited to add: my DH's cousins own hair salons. These guys are some of the biggest degenerate losers that I've ever met and they are ROLLING IN THE DOUGH! They never even show up for work, but the businesses are raking in the cash!

So, that's why I'm thinking that you could have quite a successful business if you run it yourself!
